71 Cutlass Center Link

I have a full rebuild of my front suspension. I have umi control arms and qa1 coil overs with a borgeson quick ratio steering gear box. I’m in the process of installing tire rods and center link and the center link does not want to act right. It is hitting the crossmember and these are replacement moog parts. Do you think there could be a defect in the centerlink that is causing this or am I doing something wrong. Thanks.

Loosen the bolts holding the idler arm to the frame and move it around until the center link clears. This is spelled out in the Chassis Service Manual.

Joe i have tried to hook it up without the idler arm and i still have problems. Right now its hooked up but rubbing cross member without the tire rod hooked up to it. Just pitman arm and idler. Would the wheels have an affect on it until being align.

Sorry, but I don't know what that means. You say " i have tried to hook it up without the idler arm and i still have problems", then you say "Right now its hooked up but rubbing cross member without the tire rod hooked up to it. Just pitman arm and idler.".

As you have it currently, loosen the bolts from the idler arm to the frame and slide the idler arm around on the frame to maximize clearance of the center link to the crossmember, as I said above. The tie rods have zero effect on this.

Im sorry I was wrong. Ok it is hooked up to the steering gearbox and idler. The side that the idler is on has clearance. The side the gearbox is on is rubbing. What I meant to say was I had it hooked up loose to idler and the gearbox side was still rubbing. Unless there is a defect in a part somewhere I don't see what going on. I can take pics and post when I get off to see if anybody see anything out of ordinary. Thanks

One more time. Loosen the idler arm to frame bolts and move it around until you get clearance. That WILL increase clearance at the steering box side. You can also loosen the steering box to frame bolts and do the same.

Follow Joe's advice. I recall the same conundrum some years ago. I (incorrectly) suspected it would be a no brainer until there wasn't enough room. I thoroughly convinced myself to re-read the CSM. Yep, clearly spells out the procedure.
