'68 Cutlass - New spring ?'s (again...)
'68 Cutlass - New spring ?'s (again...)
Time to order the new springs and am looking for input...
Car is an 'S' vert 350 w/ no A/C...
I'd like the ride height to be just a bit above stock. Here it is as it sat prior to teardown...Pretty close, but its completely empty and the rears really drop if there's anything in the back seat/trunk.

I really like the stance/height/look of ctrain22's 442...

After studying various charts/websites like
http://bbb-carb.com/coilsprings/olds...s_rwd_8cyl.htm
http://www.classiccarsprings.com/coi...fications.html
I've come up with the following choices...
Front
5372 (Stock replacement)
11" Ride ht
1843 Load
288 lb/in rate
5374 (OPG lists for all 68 non-442 w/o A/C)
11" Ride ht
1957 Load lbs
317 lb/in rate
5390 (OPG lists as all 68 non-442 w/ A/C)
11" Ride ht
1952 Load lbs
336 lb/in rate
5450 (on ctrain22's car, but his is 400 w/ A/C)
12" Ride ht
1642 Load lbs
450 lb/in rate
5536 ( very high rate = stiff)
11" Ride ht
1984 Load lbs
487 lb/in rate
5398 (Interesting.....almost 5450 height & load, but with good (>350) rate)
11.5" Ride ht
1678 Load
365 lb/in rate
And, the mystery contender...I have a box of Sealed Power springs - part # 831-5872 that I bought ~ 20+ years ago as replacement fronts. If the part # was 831-5372, I'd suspect they were the 5372s above, but I can't x-ref 5872 anywhere..
Rears
5409 ( stock 442 repl)
7.5 Ride Ht
847 Load
143 Lb/in rate
CC501 (Cargo coil - progressive)
8 Ride ht
810 Load
175 Lb/in rate
For the fronts, I'm looking at the 5398 or 5390. These seem to put it in the 442 load/rate range while adjusting for less weight of 350 non-A/C.
The rears are kinda a tossup. I'd just like to not be dragging tailpipes if the top's down and back seats are full, yet not be looking like an old Falcon with 12" dropped shackles when empty...
Any ideas ? Experiences ?
Thanks....!
