67 442 front spring length

Hi All-

I have my front suspension out and am wondering about my front springs. The car is a low mileage example which sat for many years… since at least the early 1990s. Would you recommend replacing the springs or not necessarily? I’m also wondering what the uncompressed length should be… mine both measure about 15-3/4”. No AC automatic car if that’s relevant

thank you!

Well dang, I have the Moog spring application data on a USB hard drive, but since I’m on an Apple device and Apple made a conscious decision to NOT allow connection to USB storage media, I am not able to post the spring information. I’ll try later after I dust off my Windows machine.

Keep in mind that free height of a spring isn't the only thing that determines ride height. Spring rate matters as well. You can have two springs with different spring rates and correspondingly different free heights and the ride height will be the same. The spring with the lower rate will be softer and need to have a taller free height, but once loaded they will be the same.

I looked at the spring data and it does not have any applications for a 442 with 400 cid engine, only Cutlass with 330 engine.

about 25,000 miles. My concern is more around them being compressed for 60 years, but I don’t know enough to know which factor is bigger. Just wondered if anyone knew if that was about the right uncompressed length before I spend time blasting and repainting the originals

I replaced my springs at about 30,000 miles because I thought the same thing.
Replaced with a service replacement set and it rode at the same height so no gain there.
It seems the mileage means more to the to ride height than anything else.
Try and find a good set of Eaton springs if you want to compare.

That free length is about right for the 425 lb/in 442 front springs.
