Rear Main Seal

Did I read somewhere on the forum that a rubber rear main seal seal could be installed in a 76 350 engine instead of the rope seal. If so what is the seal no. and where can it be bought. Thanks Larry

What is the brand name on this jv748 seal so I can have it crossed if necessary. My napa supplier says it's an obsolete victor no. Need more info if possible.

I did look at your link but it gave me 3 seals to deal with. Didn't say which would work with a 350 olds. Are you saying all 3 will work.

"Rear Main Seal -- BS6141 -- Small Block Neoprene Ford Type (Y-Block 239, 256, 272, 292)
Rear Main Seal -- BS13879 -- Small Block Neoprene AMC / Jeep Type (196, 199, 232, 258)
Rear Main Seal -- QBS40032 -- Big Block Neoprene Ford Type (460)"

I guess you need to know that the 350 is a small block therefore either of the BS parts [snicker] will do.

my PN database says

"SEAL, rubber rear main RRMS, SB Olds, Fel-Pro, Ford 292. BS6141
NAPA NGAJV748, FelPro BS-6141 292 ford, Victor JV-748
NOT: BS40094 = 71-80 Mopar 360, also 72-89 Truck 360
"Use the AMC 258 6 cylinder rear seal. It fits better [cut the tangs off the upper seal]" - Dan Maxxx, ROP.com, others too. "

Find a NAPA supplier who has a clue. Or, go to Napaonline.com and search that number while checking the interchange box. You'll get a cross to the FelPro number. My nearest NAPA store has it in stock. Or, go to Advance, AutoZone, or RockAuto, all of whom show it as an active number and show the parts available.

You guys need to be nicer to your elders. I am going on 72 and I'm not familiar with Oldsmobile but I'm learning. FWIW I have the 6141 seal coming. Thanks for all who tried to help. Larry

Sorry about that, but you should see how steamed I get trying to help my old man fix computer problems over the phone...

"Type in '.....whatever.....' and hit 'Return.'"

"What's 'Return'?"

"The key on the right that makes the cursor go to the next line."

"Oh. You mean 'Enter'?"

"Yes, 'Enter' Whatever."

"Where do I type it?"

"In the address bar."

"What's the address bar?"

"The place where you type the address you're going to."

"You mean where it says 'Google'?"

"No, that's the Search bar."

"You mean where it says 'AOLmail.com'?"

"Yes, yes. There."

"But it says something there already. It says 'AOLmail.com'."

... and Joe isn't too far from your age, anyway...

Eric, can you see that I'm signalling that you're "number one"...

Besides, I was ragging on the incompetence of the NAPA employee, not the O.P.

It looks like I'm Number 1 all over town -- People give me that sign every day as I drive down the road.

The average age on this site is probably only exceeded by that on sites for collectors of Stanley steamers and Tommy Dorsey 78s... and for veterans of the Marne.

I used the AMC 6cyl seal with the ears cut off on two builds, worked fine.

Thanks for raining on my parade.
I'm about to take my Buick to a show, and I'm only 60!.

PS, I'll do a count of how many Oldsmobiles show up. Normally mine would be one, but I have enough seniority to take the Buick now.

Roger.
