cooling system flush
cooling system flush
Looking for suggestions on how to flush the cooling system on a 68 cutlass. Just repaired timing cover leak and filled with straight water. The water just looks dirty. Thinking about garden hose in top of radiator and opening drain **** and running until clear. Would this work?
Thanks
Thanks
Just get one of those Prestone flush kits that's on the rack in every parts store, then go to the hardware store and get a double-female garden hose adapter to replace their low-flow check valve version, and let 'er rip.

Instructions are with the unit. Frankly I don't remember which hose you cut.
You don't need to take the radiator hoses off, but you can, and you can jam a garden hose into any hose opening you see and give it a go.
I'd also remove the block drain plugs (usually four of them, 2 on each side, but it can vary) to flush the rusty gunk out of the block - sometimes these don't run at all when you pull them out, because there's so much stuff packed into them.
If the block seems rusty inside, it may help to run a flushing product in there for a week or two, too.
Finally, put antifreeze in it as soon as you're done, as straight water will just promote more rust and corrosion.
