I've been shopping around for a good double roller timing chain and the one I'm looking at goes for around $70, the Cloyes 9-1113. I see there is also a cheaper, single chain set for sale, C3006K for only around $20.

My motor has 143k on it. Does it makes sense to still pay the money for the better double chain and upgrade it or should I just get the standard single replacement? I don't know how long it'll last as is and can't see throwing money at it, especially if the set outlasts the motor.

 

I just picked up the lower priced cloyes for my 350. I would say its sturdy and well made and better than the OEM aluminum plastic unit. If it were me I would just get the lower price one for your 307 it should outlast the motor

 

Hmmmmm... That's a good question.

I believe that the double roller chain will give you more accuracy (more carefully machined, less allowed variation in actual timing once installed), but in a stock 307, that may provide you with exactly zero benefit.

I doubt that there is any longevity difference between the two in your application.

One thing that I haven't heard mentioned with regard to the later, heavily emission controlled 307s and 260s, is whether the cams were ground slightly retarded for emissions purposes. If they were, then you might gain by buying one of the multi-keyway adjustable sets, so that you could advance it, but, again, I have never heard of Olds cams being intentionally retarded.

Good to hear, that'll save me some money that I can spend on tools. Unless I can rent a breaker bar, I need to purchase that, though I'm hoping the parts store rents the combination puller/remover I've seen for the harmonic.
