Hello!

I´ve just been wondering, if 371 needs the heat riser valve?
Is it worth installing? There was not that valve, when I bought the Olds.
My Olds is such new for me, and I don´t really well know,
how should 371 work. The choke tube may be good
to replace?
My car is 1957 4D Super 88 with J-2

I´m just so novice..

I take it the valve is not working. Is it stuck open or closed? Open is fine. Closed is not good

Unless you drive the car in cold weather, the heat rise valve is not needed. Its purpose is to divert exhaust gas to the intake manifold to warm the fuel.

However, if you remove it, you do have to occupy the space with something to avoid an exhaust leak. If you want to retain the housing, simply remove the butterfly valve.

 

You can take a piece of bailing wire and tie it open, or take it to a muffler shop and have them weld it open. Either way will work. It does not effect the operation of the motor other than it helps it heat up faster.

 

Guy's, he is from Finland, cold starts could be a problem. A new heat riser valve is available from Fusicks new, part #HRV 490. I think they ship over seas....Tedd

My older early 70's cars never had them. I used them in zero degree weather with no problem. My 88 caprice had one. I would say if the rest of your hot air warm up system for the air cleaner is working you should be fine.
