Exhaust

Year One sucks. Buy it somwhere else, I'm sure you can find a better deal. Remember, Flowmasters sound great but don't flow as well as some others.

Do some research before you buy. Flowmasters somehow combine obnoxious loudness and droning with some of the most restrictive flow numbers on the market. In fact, Google "flowmaster" and "droning". Most folks seem to like the Walker Dynomax, which are less restrictive and yet not as obnoxious.

Flowmasters

O.K. now I'll be honest, Year One Sucks, and so do Flowmasters. Some guys love the sound, personally I can take it or leave it.

I had Delta 50 3 Chamber on my 72 350, sounded O.K. but got raspy after awhile and the drone was awful. Then switched to Magnaflows', better but still a drone. now I have long case Dynomax Turbos on it, Very suttle, still a little drone but nothing obnoxious.

Flowmasters don't flow worth a ****.

I agree with the others, I hate that sound. I have Dynomax Super Turbos on both cars, nice mellow tone, but some sound when you get on it. The 71 is quite quiet inside the car, but sounds great at idle outside, best of both worlds. And, they are inexpensive.

From the Dynomax website, the Ultra Flows flow considerably better than the Super Turbos, and they should as the UFs are straight through, where the STs have "S" shaped chambers. So UFs would be louder, of course.
How much different do they sound?

I bought my system from Summit. I don't know if they will let you swap mufflers though.
I had a Flomaster system on my other 70 about 15 years ago. That one was quieter than this one is. I think these are 2 chamber where the old system had 3 chamber. Makes a big difference.

I put on flowmasters and Im not really happy with them. They sound nice and certain speeds but they drone. Luckily I only take my car out a couple times a month. If you are planing on driving your car a few times a week I would go with the dynomax.

Any thoughts on putting any of thes in a convertible? When I do drive it, 90% of the time the top is down.....is the drone only heard in an enclosed vehicle?

If you love loud sounds then put the 40 series muffler .

That's what i have on my 70 Cutlass. Its already noisy here in NYC so why not.

Flowmasters

I have the Flowmasters on my convertible. Prior owner added right before I got the car, so I don't have any basis for comparison on this vehicle. I will say that I definitely hear the exhaust inside the car with the top up or down. It is loud enough to where I need to add a radio amp to hear the tunes at highway speeds. At idle it has a nice rumble, but not very loud from within the car.

There is a drone at certain RPMs, but the majority of the time it has a good sound, in my opinion. To each their own. I'd suggest going to a car show and trying to get some first hand samplings and pick the sound you like.

I always used flowmaster 40's but the older Im getting I am getting to a point now where I enjoy the sound of turbo plain janes or dynomax turbos. You will still know u have and olds rocket but no droning and no ears ringing after a long ride.

I used to run flowmasters on all my project cars through out the years. The drone was really driving my up the wall, it was difficult to have a conversation in the car even with full tailpipes out the back.
Three years ago I was building a supercharged car and it was time to take it to the dyno, before the dyno run the fellow that run the shop told me "you will pick up a few easy HP by changing out those flowmasters to a flow through design such as: walker dynomax, magnaflow, borla, etc. I made 5 pulls and retuned the engine, I was pretty happy with the results. The drone got the best of me so later that week I ordered a set of Magnaflow mufflers and insalled them. My car immediatly ran worse????? I was pretty hot about his advice and went to his shop the next day, he laughed it off and put the car back on the dyno and computer, the air fuel ratio was all messed up due to the increased ezhaust flow. About 3 minutes on the wideband and the car was making 18 more RWHP and was so quiet inside I could actually hear my passenger or the radio even at WOT.
If you dont like to have conversations with the wife go for the Flowmasters lol (they should use that in their marketing schemes)

i have 2 1/2 inch ID-inlet/outlet 40 series flowmaster - you can hear it on the small block forum or click here. mind you this is kinda loud due to me having no cat, just straight piped to the muffler.

I Like the Flowmasters mufflers. I had a glasspak on my V6 Alero and is sounded like ***** but that's a 60* engine though

I had Super 40's on my old Delta. X pipe, cat back exhaust, and it sounded pretty good. I picked up 2 Super 44's on Jegs earlier this year becasue they were on sale. They will find their way onto the new Delta. soon

Wow, I am surprised there are so many Flowmaster "haters" out there. Exhaust truly is a preference.

Me....I put 40 series on my 69 chevelle with a moderately built 350 and also on my 455 GTO and absolutley loved the sound on both of them.

In fact, I originally had 50 series installed on the Chevelle because, I was concerned they would be too loud and obnoxious. Well, I was back within the first hour and had the 50s removed and a set of 40s installed. MUCH BETTER!

No. The tone (or DRONE!) is personal preference. The backpressure of the muffler is easily measured in tests. Objective magazines tests consistently show the (no)Flowmasters to be among the most restrictive "performance" mufflers on the market.

Joe that's because the flow tests don't use a pulsing engine to create the test data and rather they use fans to move the air through the mufflers.
The design of the Flowmaster mufflers use the pulsing to create low pressure areas that actually pull air out of the engine in between pulses (at least that's supposed to be the science behind them) and besides all of that people win with them.
I dunno....I've had them and I like them. I was more than pleased with the performance I got out of them so take that wityh a grain of salt.

any input on this? getting the exhaust installed finally in a week for my daily 71. will straight pipe be better than H pipe? dont really care for upper rpm performance as this is my daily not a track car. have flowtech ceramics getting installed with 2 polished magnaflow mufflers and 18" long 3" diameter tips.

Not sure what series muffler they use in this kit but I have them on my Cutlass. It sounds great. Not a problem with droning either. I have Flowmasters on my Vette and it drones like crazy. It sounds like a friggin race car, I love it! I used to have stainless Magnaflows on it and it sounded like there was paper stuck in the muffler or something. Didn't like 'em. Take a listen to the video link I have up and you can hear what the Flowmasters sound like on the Cutlass. The kit came with an H-pipe.
Here's the Summit Racing catalogue page where you can order the header back system;http://www.summitracing.com/parts/flo-817409 It is the one I ordered and used.

Dynomax Ultra Flo. Better flow than Flowmaster. Look at the numbers. Sounds good without being to loud. Sounds great at WOT.

Summitracing. Fast shipping and good service

Drone? thats not drone its exhaust note! You want to hear drone, I'll turn the AFM back on in the G8 without cats and aftermarket exhuast. Now that is drone, vibrates the trunk lid like a 24inch woofer.

I have Pypes Race Pro mufflers on both my 87 Cutlass and my G8. Polished stainless and nice mellow sound unless you want them to be heard. The Cutlass is a 3 inch system, I can post some video on youtube of it going down the track if interested.

I have Flowmasters on my 55(no muscle car) and I like them fine. I I'm not experiencing any drone as many have expressed but I'm not pushing much horse power through it either plus my exhaust pipes are only 1 7/8 diameter so this could be a factor. I think one would have to hear a peculiar muffler on a punctual car to make an evulation.....Tedd

There are definitely a lot of variables to consider when buying a muffler. Stock pipes vs an aftermarket set up. Strait pipes vs H pipe vs X pipe. Finding a nice note vs less restrictions, stainless or not! Cost!
I've never had issues with Flowmasters, in fact I swore by them, until now. But, after reading this thread, I have more questions.
I do like what I heard in the youtube video posted by z11375ss. And I am still leaning towards the Flowmasters. But I do intend on asking a few more questions.

Thanks

Don't do an X-pipe. It sounds like Eurotrash. Had one on my Cobra Mustang. Took it off the same day.

for a daily driver will my 71 350 be fine with long tubes and straight pipes to mufflers and tips, or should I go H pipe because it would benefit that much more?

Sound IS personal preference...I put Series 50 Flowmasters on my
'40 Chevy coupe (warmed up 355 sbc). Flowmaster's site said the 50's would be quieter inside the car). At about 2400 rpm, there is a drone inside, bad enough I have to turn up my "tunes", so I'm a bit disappointed about that. I thought it might be because I ran the tailpipes out into the corners of the rear fenders, but after reading this post I might be wrong. I put MagnaFlows on my '65 442 (455) and they are quiet inside the car and sound great outside....plus a whole lot cheaper. I have a H pipe on the '40 and an X pipe on the 442, can't say either makes much difference in sound, but I gotta believe the X pipe would make more difference in flow. Both my cars are street rods, not racers, so flow specs don't hold much weight with me....driving at the speeds I do, eeettt dona make much difference!!!

My plan is to use the stock manifolds, or quite possibly a set of Thornton manifolds with 2" stainless steel and an H-pipe crossover. I am not opposed to headers, I just like the manifolds better and I am not building a race car, I am working on a daily driver. I've had headers in the past and they always seem to developed leaks. My brother recommends having the headers surfaced to ensure a quality seal.
I am still debating which mufflers to go with. I am still leaning towards the Flowmasters, but I may go with the Magnaflow brand.

Good to know about the X-pipe sounding like eurotrash. That was one of my many questions. I'll keep an eye out for more input from you guys here, everyones opinion(experiances) is very much appreciated. Thanks

I have an x pipe on mine, the one in the video, don't sound Euro to me. Everything is subjective as others have mentioned. I think you have to look at the system as a whole to determine what you will like or dislike.

What I suggest to everyone that has questions about exhaust sounds, is to attend some car shows, find some cars that sound the way you like, and simply ask what they have then duplicate it.
