307 or 403?

Been looking for a replacement driveline for my friends 84 lesabre. It currently has a 231 V6/ thm200 trans. Hes sick of the issues despite only have 67k on it. He wants a drop in replacement. Told him a 307 olds or a 301 Pontiac would be the easiest drop in replacement to be had cheap. Found a engine/trans on marketplace they claim is a 307 out of a 82 olds, but suspect it's a 403. I'm not an authority on olds engines so wondering if there's a way to id the engine from pictures? To me, the blue paint suggests it a 403, but seeing way to many engines being painted the wrong color

Don't try to ID the engine by the color of the paint. Look at the block casting number on the shelf above the water pump. Post that number and someone here will ID it for you.

The early 307's were painted that colour, look for a big 307 on the side of the block and a big 5A in front of #1 and behind #8 sparks plugs on the heads. Yah a 307 is much better than 403 in front of a TH200C. Make sure the TV cable is adjusted properly or even the 307 will kill it quickly.

The original trans will be pitched along with the 231. Already replaced torque converter as it was falling apart. After replacing, could clearly hear lifters ticking in the 231. 307 comes with a trans, but they didn't list which one. Not sure which axle ratio car has. From what Ive read they only came with either 2.41 or 2.73 gears. Including the other photo

If it is a driver, use whatever fits and is in good running condition. If the car has some intrinsic value, keep a Buick engine in it.

First of all, the fact that there's blue paint on the rubber valve cover grommet in the first photo says that the engine has been painted. Second, the only easy bolt in is another V6 or a Buford motor. Anything else requires changes to frame pads, motor mounts, exhaust, accessory brackets, starter, wiring, radiator, etc, etc. Be sure you fully understand the issues here (and the costs).

Have read the early 307s were blue, but no info stating when Olds went to black paint. Valve cover grommet appears to be missing. Manufactures are known for paint overspray on gaskets of the engine as they were usually painted after they were assembled. Tried looking for another V6 not many around. The V6 basically has low oil pressure. He bought the car with around 30k then had engine rebuilt when it started knocking. It now has 67k on the clock and oil light is flickering and lifters are ticking. I learned this is a common problem. Oil pump wears out prematurely as its part of the aluminum timing cover. From what ive read, the fix involves a new timing cover and high volume oil pump kit. He did an oil analysys to check for brass in the oil incase the rod bearings were wiped out. Found oil, gas, and apparently antifreeze in the sample. An olds 307 is the most common engine found for b-body. The one i found came out of a b-body and comes complete. Warned my friend of exactly what you stated weeks ago. He's just being stubborn.

I do not recall ever seeing a factory blue 307.
