Performer RPM intake

Anybody use an Edelbrock performer RPM for a 350 in a 72 Cutlass or similar A body? Debating over which intake to go with. I'd like to use the RPM but am concerned about hood clearance.

Clearance should not be an issue. The bigger issue is it a match to your engine? The operating band is 1500-6500 rpm, for a stock engine its a bit overkill.

Agreed. There’s no clearance issue (I have one on my 350) and the question of whether it’s a match for your engine setup is key. For a stock engine it’s overkill and likely detrimental to performance.

Nothing real radical. 4.080 bore 350, 9.7-1 compression, 218/226 @ .050 hydraulic roller cam, very mild stall.
What do you think, RPM too big?

The Rpm will be fine. Even in a stock app. Should clear and not be an issue. I wouldn't bother with a performer. For your set up it will be perfect.

There is an argument on the Performer vs RPM. Some have shown on a 9 to 1 350 a gain with the Performer at the track. Others have claimed gains on vin 9 307's with the RPM at the track. With your motor, which isn't very mild, a RPM will work very well. I could probably put a 1" spacer on my RPM and it would still fit on my 70. I lost performance going from a Performer with a 1" open spacer to a RPM intake. I would bet 99% of the loss was going from a 2300 to 1600 flash stall and weaker first gear of the TH350 vs the TH2004R. What gearing do you have? What is a mild stall?

This car will have a 3.73 rearend gear and the TH200R4 transmission, with an 1800 RPM convertor as stated by the transmission builder.. And I forgot to mention, it will also get a sniper EFI setup.

You guys that have run the RPM with a square bore holley, did you just use the thin adapter plate from edelbrock? Any sealing issues?

Upgrade that converter to something like a 2200 to 2500 stall. You have enough cam and compression to warrant it. I went from a 2300 flash stall, rated at 2200 to 2500 rpm. I currently have a stock stall that flashes at 1600 rpm, it sucks with my 9 to 1 350 with a 214/214 cam. I went from 1/4 block burn outs to barely spinning the tires. Hopefully your builder upped the shift points from factory 4000 rpm to 5000/5500 rpm full throttle shift points.

X2 for the bigger stall. Even with a mild cam you may have a hard time setting the idle rpm in gear due to ir being tight. A stock stall was tuneable with my carb but when i went to tje sniper EFI on my Pontiac it did not like a big rpm drop and it would die. I could have tuned for it with the efi but i suspected tje converter being tight for a long time. Just fwiw. I ran a 2800 stall and it was good on the street in my cutlass went to a 3500 stall. Not horrible but most may not like its characteristics .

He also has lock up which means less slippage, another bonus. Higher stall along with lock up is the best of both worlds.

Just an FYI, when these companies give an rpm range, it’s for the entire engine family given. In other words, apples to apples this intake would rpm higher on a 307 than it would on a 403. Again apples to apples.

I didnt want to go there but i ran an rpm intake on a 307 with a 650 DP Holley. On a stock 307 lol. Was a peppy little engine in my 72 when i was between 350's. Would lay rubber like it was no ones business.
