Alternator and power steering brackets, 1972 cutlass 350,
Hi! I have a 1972 cutlass with a 350 and AC. Can I trouble anyone to post some good pics of the alternator brackets and how they intermingle with the power steering pump bracket? I am having trouble matching up my brackets compared with the assembly manual. And can anyone post pics of the AC bracket locations? Thanks so much!
What bracket is this? This looks like one from the assembly manual but I'm unsure of how it attaches. Is this the correct bracket for the adjustment of the alternator belt? This is what I think is the correct top portion for the alternator shown in the assembly manual. This is what I installed but it looks nothing like what's in the assembly manual. Could this be from a 70 or 71? Here's another of what I installed which I think is wrong although it bolted right up to the block.

'71 & '72 brackets are not the same. It looks like you have pieces from both years. The '71 brackets use the "H" shaped upper piece to span the LH valve cover and they mount to the intake and the cylinder head. The '72 brackets use an upper piece that only mounts to the intake. I've attached 2 pages from the '71 assembly manual. I think you have most of the pieces to make a complete set of '71 brackets but you're missing the 398669 brace.
Thank you both so much! My car and engine is a 72 but my power steering pump and pulley and bracket are from a 71. I wonder if this will cause any issues. I'll have to put it all together and see. It appears that the 72 top alternator bracket lines the alternator pulley up nicely with the crank and fan pulleys but they're only mocked up now.
Not sure how I got those 68 brackets.

Here are 2 photos of parts I had powder-coated before I fully understood which parts I needed. I don't have a complete set of '71 brackets, but I think I have the brace that you are missing (PN398669). With this missing part you should have a full set of '71 style brackets.
Rodney thanks so much for the photos. Extremely helpful! I'm going to piece together and see what works with the 71 power steering pump. It may be that I need to go with the 71 brackets. Or swap back in my 72 power steering pump bracket (maybe it fits on the 71 pump).

So are the power steering pump brackets the same for the 71 and 72? It appears like that in the assembly manual. And the 71 bracketry will fit on the 72 engine with the 72 alternator and 71 ps pump?

The power steering brackets have different part numbers from ‘71 to ‘72. I honestly can’t tell if there is a dimensional difference between the two and these parts don’t have any identifying numbers stamped or cast into them so it’s difficukt to know what year part you have. Maybe someone else can chime in on that question.
Hi! My alternator is not lining up properly whether I use the 71 or the 72 bracket. I think it may be since I don't have the bottom spacer for the power steering bracket at the block. I am using washers but not sure they are giving the proper alignment. I also don't have the proper bolt in this hole so I'm sure that's not helping either. Does anyone have measurements on the two spacers the power steering pump to block use so I can buy new ones? I think these are the only spacers. Any other ideas why my alternator is sitting about 1/2" back from where the power steering and crank pulleys line up?

Rodney, good morning. I am a little confused because in the diagram you just sent with the measurements, the "small" spacer has a measurement of 0.6" whereas the "large" has a measurement of 0.4". Is that the length in inches? Meaning that the larger diameter spacer is shorter in length or is it the other way around that the spacer with the smaller diameter has is longer (or did the just say the same thing twice lol)? The "small" spacer is smaller in diameter to fit over the water pump stud and it's 0.631" long. The "large" spacer is a larger diameter to fit behind the power steering pump bracket where it bolts to the side of the block. It is 0.402" long. If you're missing these spacers, In Line Tube sells the pair for $14. I fabbed up the smaller, longer one from a section of 1/4" galvanized steel pipe, fits like a glove.
