I have a 1967 Cutlass 330 2 bbl. When I got the car the choke was not working. Car was very dry as it was kept inside a barn with other classic cars. Very clean. I soaked the linkage of the carb with WD40. the linkage was slow. After the everything was free & the choke worked fine for 3 months. Choke puller worked fine on start. Pump once or twice & it would start & run on high idle.
Last week it became hard starting. Pulled air cleaner & noticed that the high was idle was working fine but choke wasn't closing.
Is it possible that the thermostatic spring has lost it tension some? Should I try to adjust the plate on the spring housing? If so can I replace the spring? I don't see it listed in Rock Auto.
All the linkage is free.

 

Just make first sure the linkages can turn free. It is a common problem with 2bbl Rochesters that in some point somebody has over tightened the air cleaner wing-nut. This causes the carb body bend a little making the choke butterfly sticky.

If the choke butterfly binds to cab body, DON'T try to bend body back. Instead file some material of from butterfly.
You can check the choke spring operation and adjust it as follows:
Engine cold. open the air cleaner to see the butterfly. It should ba almost closed. Start your rocket and while warming up, see if the butterfly gradually opens to full open. When reaching normal operating temp, adjust the butterfly from the spring cover lid to fully open. Your done.

 

Push pedal to floor, choke plate straight up, does not close @ all. No binding of plate. Seems like choke spring doesn't enough tension to close plate.

 

Can you close the choke plate By turning the spring cover? If yes, might have a chance to get it work with right adjustment. If not, the spring is either dead or out of it's place.
