Why do Olds engine not always like aluminum intakes?

Now I have heard it before and now I am experiencing it myself. I can not get my edelbrock to seal to save my life. I am going back to the stock 3 ton cast iron intake manifold. Now mine leaks at the crossover for the egr but have heard the most problems are leaking at the coolant passages after a couple thousand miles. Now again all the tings I have heard were second hand so don't shoot the messenger. The only problem I can confirm is mine.

Thumbs up Intake Not sealing.........

Have had the same problem. Try the following intake gasket set from Jegs......Mr. Gasket 4694G..it is a thicker and Better sealing gasket than the traditional Pan Valley gasket. Hope this helps.

I used the aftermaket Edelbrock gaskets and have had no problems with my manifold. To my way of thinking Edelbrock engineered the manifold so they most likely took their design in to consideration when they designed the gaskets. Could be wrong on this but like I said I have not had any problems to date.

Hers a good summary (and solution!) of a famous problem...

http://tlentz.oldsgmail.com/howto.html#manifold

This focuses on the stock 80's AL intakes but could apply to aftermarket units also...

"Lose the rubber gaskets and use a bead of RTV silicone instead. Edelbrock and a few Olds engine builders recommend this method."

yes, this is alot better. you will have more leaks with the rubber than RTV. this is the rubber at the front and back of the block

All I can say is that in 35 years of building Oldsmobiles, I have never had a problem with an aluminum intake (factory or aftermarket) on either a BBO or SBO using the factory style turkey tray gasket.

Same here (except more like 30 years), be it the stocker, RPM, or Performer. I use aviation sealer around the intake ports, RTV black on the water ports and end rails.

There is a gasket sealer, made by Permatex called "the Right Stuff".
And it is just that. Works great.
I use the rubber seals at the ends with no problems.
