I just started learning to navigate through the parts catalog. Working through the 1975 edition, it looks like they are calling for a water outlet housing of 409037 for a 1971 V8 Cutlass. What is on my car is 409038. Can anyone tell me if the xxx038 superceeded the xxx037?
Mind you I have had this car for 24-25 years, so have a built up a bit of a parts stash. In that stash is a ACDelco housing , #12302551, Turns out, the formed fitting on it is bit offset from the water pump nipple. I made it work with the hose, but it is offset, and I am afraid that will eventually become a leak point. That xxx551 I got from a vendor, that said it fit, but I don't it is for the Olds V8. Googling that number I found references to Cadillacs, etc.
The early 1971 cars used die cast water neck 404632. Later cars used the cast iron water neck 409037. See the attached Engineering Order. I suspect that 409038 is the casting number for the iron part. Once that was machined and the J-tube pressed in, it was assigned a different part number. The parts book shows part numbers, not casting numbers.

Thanks Joe, You are spot on, that 409038 is the number off of the casting; I assumed it was the part number.
There are at least three different versions of the cast aluminum water neck. I have pics of the differences somewhere if I can find them. I think I posted them on here before. Do a search for them.
