Starter bracket

I have a 77 CS/403. I saw the Chassis manual showed the shield/bracket. Mine was missing. I purchased a repo one. The starter doesn't have a threaded hole for the bracket. The engine block does.I have had the car since new and I don't remember ever changing the starter or removing the bracket. Now in the 35 years of fixing cars is very possible I did replace the starter. I just don't recall.
#1- did the 77/403 come with the shield/bracket?
#2-Do I need a different starter and how would I order one with a threaded hole?
#3-Is it possible to make a threaded hole in mine?
#4-Is my memory really that bad??? LOL

Thanks again for your input

Not sure, but IIRC, 'yes' and its the big plate one as opposed to the simple bar.

Probably not if yours is working as there are many cars out there with no bracket (see #4) .....Good luck. Most 'rebuilts' use a generic non-holed body.

Yes. Either disassbl and drill/tap....or carefully drill & tap with a bottoming tap

Probably not! Many brackets were discarded the first time the starter was replaced with a non-hole version.

Thanks for the reply. I did want to install the new shield. I was assuming the factory installed it for a reason. Probably heat or vibration issues. Disassembly might be the way to go or fabricate a band with a stud on it.

Or tack an appropriate nut to the starter...
