Rough Idle
Rough Idle
Hey Guys,
As much as I dislike vague questions, I'll apologize ahead of time. Here's a bit of background so you know where I'm at. In the beginning stages of engine tune-up/repair and here's what has been done so far and things still on the list:
Valve covers - replaced/done
Valve cover gaskets - replaced/done
Plug wires - replaced/done
Plugs - Next to be done
PCV valve & hose - replaced
Valve cover air breather - Installed (replaced old snorkle adapter)
Open air element - installed/new
QJet 4BBL - Rebuilt, calibration kit installed
Timing: Next on the list
After everything has been installed and replaced, it started up after a couple of tries and ran pretty well. This car was sitting dead for almost 2 years before I got my hands on it as it was my wife's uncles vehicle since 1970 but he passed away a few years ago. Long story short, I now have the car and I'm working on it piece by piece.
I'm noticing a pretty rough idle, at first at a fairly moderate RPM then after a few throttle rev's, it settles down considerably but it also isn't running as smooth as I'd hoped. I haven't messed with the idle mixture screws on the carb other than screwing them all the way down and then backing off 3-4 turns. Could this be a result of the plugs needing to be changed or a timing issue? What other 'common' things should I check for? I know that's a loaded question but I'm trying to see what I can rule out and what should be addressed based on severity/complexity of the problem.

Since the car sat for 2 years, I see no mention of any fuel system cleaning. To answer your question about engines running rough because of tuneup issues, the answer is yes.
How many miles are on this car? Has the timing chain been changed? By all means throw a tuneup at it.

I'm not a mechanic and I don't pretend to be...but is there fresh gas in there? Did you change the fuel filter? That's where I'd start esp if it has been sitting for 2 years.
Your problems could be numerous. I just went through my own idling issue. A LOT of process of elimination.
But, there's a A LOT of people on here with good info who will point you in the right direction.
Good Luck!

Speaking of that, I replaced the in line fuel filter when I did the carb. I plan on replacing the fuel pump on the passenger side of the engine as soon as I have enough cash to pick up a new one. What else should I focus on pertaining to fuel? I don't have any know-how to drop the fuel tank and drain/refill, is that something that would be needed? Is there an 'additive' that can be added to improve the existing fuel?
Hmmmmm. If the fuel smells like varnish, I would pull the tank. The fuel tank is very easy to drop, 2 metal straps, 1 wire, and a few little fuel lines. Thats where I would start, drain it, and get it cleaned (I use my local radiator shop). Then pull the float and check the screen.
