Recommendations on carburetor replacement on 330

Hi, long time since my last post. I've been enjoying my rebuilt 330 I did a couple summers ago. When I did the rebuild I kept everything original, including the crappy Rochester 4GC carburetor.

I've decided it''s finally time to replace that piece of junk carb, I'm thinking about the Edelbrock Performer 1406 600 cfm. The thing is, I cannot for the life of me figure out if I will need to replace the air cleaner too based on clearance and diameter. My preference is to keep the original 5 1/8 original air cleaner.

Any suggestions or recommendations? What else will I need to convert?

I did change my carb to the Edelbrock 600, and I needed to replace the air cleaner. I went with the 2 1/2 in K&N out of summit. Now I'm thinking of going to a 500cfm,
don't know if I will get better performance/mileage. I also have a 65 f85 with the 330ci, mine has been bored .30 over and a slightly hotter cam.

Your air cleaner base will not fit the Ebrock carb it will need to be modified for the larger opening or you can get an aftermarket. As the 4GC is a squarebore carb no adaptor is required.

I have the 1406 as well I liked it a lot when I was driving it. Had to change the air cleaner to fit or as said above it could be modified or possibly find a later base ?

I have a 1406 on my '70 350, works very well and is easy to tune and disassemble for cleaning. I use an Edle air cleaner.

I neglected to say that I changed the stock intake for a edelbrock midrise(forget the number now) with a 1/2 spacer and until I changed the air breather, I couldn't close the hood. How do you guys feel or know about going down in size carb wise? Wondering if maybe the 600 is to much.

I'd look into the Quick Fuel "Slayer". They make a 600 that would be perfect for your combination imo. A lot of carb for the money.

Another option is the Street Demon 625. Based off the Thermoquad but new 3 barrel castings for square and spreadbore intakes.

Interesting topic because I was wondering the benefits of a 4v on the 330 in my '66. It's a low compression, 9:1, engine that currently runs the stock 2v. I'm happy with the carb but have to pull the intake to replace a leaky intake gasket. My son believes we should look into putting a 4v carb and intake on it. The car still runs the Jetaway tranny and highway gears. I personally would opt for better gears and/or transmission.

Right now the car is factory stock so I kinda have a blank slate to work with. As is it's a dog off the line. What say you guys for best bang for the buck???

Well, swapping the 2 speed transmission for a 3 speed would give you a huge performance increase, but it's a bit of work and expense. Additionally, installing lower rear gears gives a huge boost in performance.

Installing a 4bbl carb and intake isn't quite as much work or expense.

I have the 600 on advice from Edelbrock...but wonder if it might be too big. Why would a 500 be better (newbie here).

Thanks!
