Well its been a while since I've been on here but heres a recap I bought a 72' cutlass 2d coupe bout 7 months ago in I could geuss fair condition but I finally started striping it down in the past month little by little today I got it on the motor stand flipped her over took 2 pistons out cleaned them off and seen that they were stamped 30 only geussing .030 I don't have the measuring tools but i took a ring off and pushed it flush and by a geusstamation it looks like .040 gap in the ring the casting number is 395558-2 by the book is 68'-70' 350 v8 160hp etc. 2v iron intake etc. anyway manual says .010 -.025 piston size. What can I do besides putting in sleeves they say its exspensive to do it? Or is it? Or do i need to find a new block?

 

.040 + .060 pistons should be available - look through the catalogs so you can tell the machine shop what you'll supply!

 

well my qeustion is if its bored again will it get to hot? at .040 + .060? thin walls you know

 

All 350's I have built have never had a problem being bored .060 over. There are folks who bore even more and install custom pistons but that usually requires a sonic test just to be on the safe side. My .060 over motors were pretty stout and had stock cooling systems and I never had any customer or personal issues with over heating, so long as everything else is in check, timing, compression within reason and so forth.

 

Old school "301" SBC was a 283 + .125 overbore!
Somebody musta done mine right, 'cause I beat it hard for about 60k miles, and still got $300 for the short block!
Never had an overheating problem, either, in a tri-5 sedan.

You should be safe up to a .060 overbore.

 

now i have some news....i still don't have the tools to measure it with but it seems like its not been bored at all the reason i say this is doesn't the piston have the year stamped on the inside rim? if so it says 68 and if that true then those should be the original pistons? but it has 30 stamped on the face of all the pistons meaning its factory right? or am i just assuming that the 30 means .030 bore? and the cylinder has a worn lip so all in all is it possible it came from the factory already bore too .030?
