Pulley Tolerances

Whew! I have just been throught the ringer thrice trying to get the correct water pump for my 71 Cutlass w/o AC. Turns out mine takes the shortest one like was used on the 70 with HD cooling. Now, I am a little concerned with the space between the water pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley. It looks like it's about 1/8 of an inch betwen the two. Is that correct? Does anyone know the specs on this?

The edges sit close to one another, but the sheaves should line up.

1970 cars with HD cooling used the same LONG water pump as A/C cars. In any case, there are only three different water pump lengths. Frankly, I'm a little mystified as to why this seems to be a perennial problem for people.
