Start by turning the crank by hand. Either a compression test and oil pressure check, which means it has to run or a complete tear down and measure are the only way to know. My 1976 Olds 350 with a Performer cam advanced 2 degrees, which I added with a new Cloyes roller timing set, had 140 to 142 psi cranking pressure and 20 psi hot in gear and 50 psi at cruise oil pressure for $120. There are deals out there, depends on the price.

Is it advertised as a running engine? You say it needs an overhaul so you would have to factor that into the cost. You might be better off finding a used but running engine if you are just after a driver. If you are planning to build a performance engine then that should do fine. Any Olds V8 since 1964 should fit in a vehicle that came with an Olds engine. Some easier than others though.

By the colour, it could be a mid 70's and up 350 or 403. It could be a 260 or very early 307 as well, so casting numbers are important. It looks to have a Performer intake as well.
