Oil slinger ?

Oil slinger ?

I took the timing chain cover off my 350 to change the front oil seal. This engine was rebuilt about 15000 miles ago. Soooooo I am looking in the FSM and notice this thing called an oil slinger. There is no such animal on my engine. Should I delay the reassembly to get one? Or just put it back together like it is. It seems to have done ok for the past 15k miles.

I always thought they helped with front seal leaks by throwing the oil away from the seal. Some unscrupulous mechanics just toss them after completing install of the cover then seeing the slinger on the workbench.

Thanks For the extra effort and advise Eric. I just hit the "Buy It Now" button and will put off putting it back together. Better to do it right. Right?

It could be that is why you needed to replace the seal after 15000 miles, cuz the slinger wasn't reinstalled back then?? Could you imagine if every Olds engine built needed to have the front seal replaced at 15000 miles? That would be unacceptable.

Greg, you are right 15000. IS unaccepatable. The slinger may be part of the problem but the biggest problem was the VERY slight wear groove in the dampener that I ignored when the engine was rebuilt. I just wonder what happened to the slinger before I rebuilt it.

Frustrated

I was away all last week. Could not wait to get home and start putting things back together this weekend. Virtually every part in the box was wrong. The slinger hole was too small. The timing cover gasket set was wrong and so was the front seal. Even the valve cover gaskets were wrong. I ordered everything from Summit. Not sure if it was them or me. When I checked the p/n's they come back for a 1975-1977 Olds 350 instead of 1970.
Oh well the right stuff is on order and now I need to get the wrong stuff returned.

Were they chebby 350? All those parts are interchangeable between a 68 and 80 Olds 350.

^^^This. The slinger, front cover, and crank snout diameter are exactly the same on every Olds V8 from 1964-1990.

Thanks Joe and Olds 307 for verifying I have not lost my mind. I thought all 350 Olds were basically the same. I did not think twice when I saw the 1975-1976 model designation under applications because of this. Let's hope the right parts arrive tomorrow. I am working with Summitt to return this Chebby Crap.
