Oil Pressure
Oil Pressure
Can an oil filter cause a loss of oil pressure? I have a 1970 350 engine that was just rebuilt and I broke the camshaft in running it at 1800 rpm for 20 minutes. While the motor was running the oil pressure was 55 at starts up and when I shut it down it was 35 after around 30 minutes of run time. A few days later I changed out the break in oil and put in regular oil and a new oil filter. I started the engine and had no oil pressure reading on the gauge
I did run the engine for a few minutes thinking the gauge was incorrect.. I stopped the engine and installed a pressure gauge. no oil pressure. I swapped the filters with the one I broke in the engine, and I had pressure but now I have a silver color in the oil which I did not have when I drained the break in oil. Pressure now is 5 at idle and 20at around 2500 rpm or so. Thanks for any help.

First thing i would do is have your machine shop cut the filter (the first one) open for you and see what it look like inside. That will tell you which way to proceed. Silver in the oil is normally not a good sign

The break in oil drained out into a new pan just in case there was a problem and it looked as good as when I put it in. The second oil I drained was silver in color . I had no oil pressure with the second oil filter and pressure with the first one. I know it will need aa rebuild but could the filter cause it?
I suppose if the filter came apart internally it could cause no oil pressure. I have seen it happen in a Chevy engine twice. Only way to know is to cut that filter apart and see what it looks like also.
Either the cam went flat or you have cooked bearings. My 403 ate the rod bearings, guessing unheard detonation. Also had a cam go flat, some silver in the oil, same low oil low oil pressure from wiped bearings. The oil was very silver.in colour, sorry to hear this.
