Oil pickup - face the front or the back?

Engine is a 330 high compression out of a 67 Cutlass Supreme convertible. I don't know anything about the old oil pump. The new one on the right came from Napa. Note for the scoop with the screen the old one faces the front of the engine while on the new one it faces the back. This will just be a stock build, no crazy driving or quests for high power or speed.

Any opinions about which way is better? Maybe it doesn't matter for my stock build but it might matter for higher power builds.

I would not think it matters and you could swap one from the other as the tubes are pressed in but not so tight as they cannot move or come out.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think it would matter, being at the bottom of the oil pan, but maybe someone knew more about turbulence or something else like that.

And you're welding it with the pump installed why?

Yes, I welded the new oil pump pickup bolted to the engine, so I could see the pickup is in the correct place. It was one tack with a TIG torch. I put something between the weld point and the engine, even though there wasn't any spatter from the TIG process. What's the concern?

The only possible difference I can imagine about the opening on the pickup would be due to a starvation condition due to negative or positive acceleration. This is unlikely to occur during "normal" driving with a full level of oil.
Welding on the assembled engine sometime can cause other component damage due to errant current travel, but in your case, considering the ground placement, the current can only travel one way.

Some people don't take those precautions.

Next time maybe invest in a Sharpie. Mount the pump, mark the location of the pickup then remove the pump and weld it elsewhere.

In hindsight it would have been better to weld the pickup off the engine. I can think of a few other ways that would have been better. I'm saying I agree
