Oil Dipstick Holder

Hello:

We pulled the heads on a 71 350 olds and while doing that the dipstick holder broke off. It looks like the bottom part is still in the block. Two questions:

1) how do you get the piece out that is still in the block

2) how do we replace it.

Thanks for your help

You can tap it out whan you take the oil pan off as there will be a good portion still in the block. Then you can buy a mr. gasket replacement and push it in and thats about it.

Pretty much. if you have nothing to hold onto if you broke your dipstick right at the block. Anything else you run the risk of metal particles falling into the pan. Now if it there is still some above the block i would use some vice grips and rock it back and forth while pulling up to get it out. But if you have manifolds you might have to pull the one off . If i remember right the dip stick goes between the block and manifold.

I've pulled them without removing the pan by using a slide hammer. Here's an old thread discussing this situation.

No, the pan doesn't need to come off. Put in a self tapping screw, clamp on vise grips and tap out. I have done it twice with sucess.

the only reason i dont like the self tapper method or slide hammer is the risk of metal debris that can go into the oil pan. But if it happened to me i would probably use this method . Now if the engine is out then poping the pan off is easy. I always replace the dip stick. and i have only had them brake on me when the engine was coming out.

It's a very low risk. If you're really worried about it, coat the screw with wheel bearing grease first to capture any metal filings that might be generated.

I've done this so often that I've made an adapter for my slide hammer. I have a screw that threads into the broken dipstick tube and I welded it to another screw that fits into the tip of my slide hammer (head-to-head). Takes about 30 seconds to pull the broken stub out of the block.

You can also get some stout wire or thin metal rod and put a 'L' or 'J' bend on the end and use it to hook it out. Another idea is to take a 3/16 or 1/4 inch rod (not sure if the 1/4 will go in) and cut a groove in it like a knitting needle and use it to grab the lip on the bottom. Slide hammer on it would have it out in no time.
