novice 403 rebuild questions, balancer/antifreeze priming

hello all, i have 2 stupid questions about my rebuild,
first, on the harmonic balancer install, is the back surface of the
balancer supposed to mate flush with the the front face of the crank surface? i just noticed a small gap between the two after i tightened and removed the balancer bolt.

second, what way is recommened to prime the block with anti freeze
before first start up. engine is still on the stand with the heads on, no intake installed yet. just getting ready to finish assembly as the weather breaks.

thanks for all your help with this and questions in the past, you all are great.

Gary

Welcome to the forum, I take it you have not run the engine yet? So you will brake it in , in the car? I would get it in the car and just put water in the rad for now, start it and go through the brake in process , make sure all is good , no leaks , then drain rad and use anti freeze.

@Dent, if i just fill radiator, will the water pump be able to fill the block
quick enough and get rid of any air pockets within the block so as to
not overheat?

and the motor has not been run yet after this rebuild so the block
is completely empy. block was torn apart and tank dipped to clean.

thanks for the reply,
Gary

As you fill the rad it will go into the block , just keep topping up the rad till it stops going down.

If you are worried, drill an 1/8" hole on one of the flat spots on your thermostat. That will allow any trapped air to escape from the block.

No. The balancer is supposed to bottom on the oil slinger inside the front cover, not on the tip of the crank snout. This is what keeps the crank gear in place.
