(Not a) 350 Chevy Small Block?

Sure looks like a 350 Olds to me! Can't tell you how many times over my many years I've had "mechanics" tell me that 350 Olds, Chevies, Buicks and Pontiacs were all the same. Just consider the source.

Personally I would change out the air cleaner to a standard round element type. I have had lots of issues with that one you have. the engine is an Olds but if that is the original intake then it is a later model. not that that is bad or anything. it looks like they cleaned it up pretty nicely before they put it in and if it runs smoothly with no smoke then it will likely run forever with basic maintenance, they are pretty tough engines.

I'm changing the air cleaner LMAO for one its not even bolted down, while i was @ Goodyear, the wind blew it off :::rolling eyes:::, the last owner did some shady shortcuts, im finding out new things daily LOL. Im going to get a round chrome one. Any suggestions? Yea....i don't know about those guys. I am going back just because one of the guys keeps volunteering to do free stuff I need (i know, im bad!) but I will definitly say that Limey!

YEA i will back ya on this one that element does not let it breathe like it should the foam in there is kinda dense , they offer a lot of different ones out there but my opinion only, and it doesnt ness hanve to be a stock one K&N offer alot of good choices
I have used with great results the K&N Extreme air filter set up
let me grab a pic to show

Hands down, the oil filler tube is the dead giveaway that you are dealing with a small block Oldsmobile. The other tell-tale item is the very wide intake manifold. Beautiful car!
#13
Sure! Man those goodyear guys are idiots then! They said I shouldnt buy it just because the "guy" painted the motor blue......WoW. I'm going to a car show soon to try and find a real mechanic

here ya go Anthony (<<===real name) since were gonna be neighbors and all LMAO
And if you go with the 4" one measure first to make sure you will have the hood clearance that is needed for the taller filter

weathers getting warmer so the car shows should be starting up. talk to people there with Oldsmobiles and I am sure they can point you to a good local shop to work on the car. that and seeing others cars will give you a good idea of any changes you may want to make in the future.

Great lookin car! Sorry, but don't care much for the rims & tires.
Get away from that place where you brought your car. Hate to see anyone steered in the wrong direction and spend ridiculous$$ when it wasn't called for.
You're in good hands on this site to help you with your Oldsmobile homework. Stick around, it only gets better! LOL!
There's a lot of great info on this site to learn from, a lot of great knowledgeable people to learn from too and help you save some $$ at the same time.

thats the tricky part have to have some hold the hood while you stick your arm and head under the hood ...........................
#19
no really open your hood put a 1/4" slat from inner fender to inner fender and measure from base of old air cleaner to the bottom of the piece of wood
you can go to any lumber store tell them you want a 5 foot section of 1/8" slat they will know what you mean
#24
Glad to hear you will never go back to that place again.
Arm yourself with some knowledge from this site, and when a potential mechanic opens his mouth, you can tell right away if he knows his stuff, or he stuffs his nose.
They always assume young people don't know squat. Makes you wonder what they are really trying to sell.
BTW, safety tip... when you pop the hood for a peek, don't let the hood tooth bite the back of your skull.
Many a 68-72 Cutlass owners have the scars that bear this truth.
Good luck,
Jim

The hood tooth attached to the hood ended in '70 so you don't bash your head on the '71's and '72's.
If you post the engine casting and serial numbers somebody will tell you exactly what it is or you can figure it out with the Wiki info.
The casting numbers are just behind the water pump on the top of the block, not the manifold. The serial munbers are on a machined pad on the left front side of the block

Looks like you need the upper radiator hose to the radiator top plate hose retention clamp?
Cutlassgal just bought one for her car, must be a girl thing.
Keeps the fan blade from hitting the hose.
I have the 28 dollar type air cleaner for for go and a stock one I use for show, the housings can be whatever but the filter element is what's important.
Getting guys to work for free?, did you talk to Cutlassgal?
I taught my daughters to take guys for everything they got if they ask for it so no problem here.
I volunteered to help Sandy with her car but it's a car guy thing and she lives 20 minutes away, plus she's helpless...like a fox.
What Sandy doesn't know yet is that she has to mow my lawn all Summer in return, and weedeater it, once weekly at least.

I know everyone has their own tastes for what looks good, and some folks probably like your wheels. But if that were my Cutlass those would have to go. They look like they belong on one of those "dub" cars that are jacked up in the air like a 4 wheeler. That car would look awesome with some good old Crager SS or some American Torque Thrusts.

The casting numbers is towards the front of the engine behind the water pump on the self to left of the oil filler tube. Its the right if your standing in front of the engine looking towards the car.
The numbers on the head would be right under that bracket. You can go the the pass side and look on that head. It would be all the to the back of the engine. Same area as the other head.

That's the firing order. If you look for the casting numbers for the block. They are in front of the intake behind the water pump in between the oil filler tube and oil sending unit on the self area. The number for the 350 should be 395558. You might have to clean the area to see the number.

The air cleaner is on top. The carburetor is under the air cleaner. The intake is under the carburetor.
The oil filler is where you put your oil in the engine. It is the tube sticking up on the front of the engine.
