new and need some help

hi
i just want to say this is a great site

i have a 1972 cutlass supreme runs great today the overflow coolent was boiling just wondering where i should start im thinking thermostat what else could cause this?

also noticed some gime build up in my rear drum brakes is this the wheel cylinders or the axle seal?

any help would be great

hi, welcome to our site. There are quite a few reasons for overheating; low coolant level to begin with, old radiator, bad cap that doesn't hold pressure, are a few that come to mind. Have your cap checked, flush the system and refill. Those are two things that don't cost much and could solve your problem. The second problem could be a leaky cylinder. Take off the drum and look at the backing plate, is the stain from the cylinder down? If so, that's your answer.

i just put a new rad, cap and fluid in 2 summers ago could the cap be defective? how would i check?

do you have any heat coming out of your heater? if not the thermostat could be bad
