Need .040 mains on a 330
So my machinist thought it practical to have rods and mains in the same undersize so he ground both to .040 and now my rare 330 crank is useless since i can’t find a single place that sells or ships .040 bearings. Do any of you all have any wisdom? Can i grab a stock 403 crank and drop it in?
I really want to keep the 330 crank but at this point it seems like it’s done for.
thanks for any input

According to the Clevite book the first design had a full groove #1 main. It looks like it was only the first year.
I checked with King and they do not have them and no ETA Federal Mogul and ACL also show them in 40 but have not heard back yet to see if they actually have them.

Oldsmaniac, Kirdid is in Norway, there may not be many 330s or for that matter any other Oldsmobile motors available there! I would imagine that shipping a crankshaft from the US would be quite expensive. Kirdid, place a new post in the "Parts Wanted" section of the "Classifieds" for these engine bearings and NO the 403 crankshaft would not be directly useable in a 330 block. The engine bearings are the same but Oldsmobile changed the flywheel flange bolt pattern in 1968 when they introduced the larger bore 350 engine. You would need the crankshaft, flywheel, and harmonic balancer from the 403 (or 350) and most probably would require rebalancing with your piston/rod assemblies.

Forgive me for not knowing you were from another world, your world would be difficult to source 330 engine parts for sure and even finding a good machinist. We have the same problem here when Chevys are the only thing they know. The disposable cars and engines of today are causing machine shops to close.

ahhh, thank you for the reply! I will do as you have said, and i also sent an inquiry to Egge and asked if they would resize their .060 down to .040 for me and waiting for a reply there. The only olds engines on market here right now are two 403’s that have been beaten to hell it looks like.

He would have to cut the crank to .060 because that is the bearings available from Egge if he can't find any .040's. King, ACL and Sealed Power all have .040's in the catalog but nobody seems to actually have them.

Update!
Nothing to be found, not clevite, sealed power, egge, king, etc. there are no bearings to be found. Which means that for the forseable future i’ll keep my 330 crank for an upgrade later on. I’m looking into a 403 crank that is cheap but then i would have to balance it with the flywheel of my 330 which i don’t know if even works with the added crank weight. Could have bought a crankshaft but the shipping will absolutely ruin me, would’ve cost me 200$ to ship main bearings.

my line of thought with the 403 would be to buy a harmonic balancer given that i could source a flywheel. I will keep digging
