My pistons

Here are some pics of my pistons lets see if i can figure out how to get them here.

Well i figured it out they are just huge pics lol. So here is the question there are two different sets of rings that i can get from summit. Which ones should i go with. Here are the links to them.

Found out so crappy news. I already had some of my engine back together. I had the new cam installed i have the crank in and the timing chain and gears installed and the front plate and water pump installed. Now i find out from the engine shop that i will have to get my rotating assy balanced since i got new pistons. Now i have to take what i have put together back apart not a real big deal just a *** pain more then anything. Does anyone really post on this site i see post from back in 2006 that never got answered mabye i post in the wrong forums.

Thumbs up Pistons.......and Rings.......

You are correct!!! You will need to have your rotating assembly balanced. This does a couple of things. First and foremost, it will make sure that your engine is balanced, thus improving it's life expectancy, second it will not vibrate, causing pre-mature bearing wear and possibly failure. I would contact Dick Miller for the engine rings, ( he has zero gap rings ) little more money but more HP and better sealing. I have an olds 350 .30 over bore with 11/1 comp ratio and used his rings with get results. Also had my rotating assembly balanced and it runs AWESOME!!!!!! Hope this helps....

P.S. There are not alot of companies that have rings in that size. This is what I have found out.

Pistons

I see by the first picture that you didn't bore it? Why would you buy new pistons and not bore it when you can see ring wear in the cylinders?

Whenever you change just about anything you always need to recheck the balance, especially if you want to do it right.

Rings.........

Just a note I am using the same pistons as you have but mine are .030 over.
If you are on a budget use the moly rings from summit. If you can have a few extra bucks go with the zero gap rings from Dick Miller Racing. Just Google his name and you should be able to find his contact info.........

I see you are running a high volume oil pump.....Just make \certain you use a pan that has extra oil capacity as that pump can suck a standard pan dry.......

Well the engine shop owner said that it didnt need to be bored over he said it was in good enough shape to just hone it out and there is no need to bore an engine over unless it needs it. So he has been doing his job and running his business for over 20 years i just listened to him.

Yes i know Dick Miller Racing i ordered my fuel pump block off from him and also my motor mounts i will look into the rings thanks.

Yes i got the high volume oil pump and the moroso oil pump pickup i am just waiting on the funds to get the oil pan i got the part number for the one i have to order to fit to the setup i got right now. I just can not get the oil pan until i get my rotating assy balanced now i didnt see this one coming but i guess these are the kind of things that happen during a build huh.

Well what should i do. Send the pistons back and get some .30 over pistons and have the engine shop bore it .30 over. What benefits will i be looking forward to doing this?????? Just more displacment right

IMHO if the engine shop checked your cylinders and found them to be within spec a hone is all you need. I can see why you would change pistons if you were going from lower compression to higher compression pistons is this your plan?

Well yes of course this is the plan who dont want more power right. Thanks Eric. But what exactly would i be looking forward to if i was to get the block bored .30 to .40 over????

IMHO boring .30 over would not yield any performance gain worth the expense. If the bores check out and all that is required is to hone them why bore them out? Seems like you are on the right track to me.

How about just asking the shop owner what the bores actually measured out to. What will the current piston to wall be etc.? Fact is you still have shadows in the form of wear from before.
