more horsepower on my 403cui engine

hi olds-guys,

i have a original 1978 olds delta 88 with a 403cui engine.
now i put cylinderheads from a 1972 350cui engine and other valves on my 403. also put a cam kit jm18/20, edelbrock 2711 manifold and a edelbrock 650cfm thunder carburator on the engine.

now my question:
Do the more horsepower from the engine damage the other parts (the transmission, the torque-converter, rear axle) when i drive full throttle? Is a street car not a race-car.
I think the original transmission is the TH350 (i don’t sure) and the rear axle has 8 7/8” (i don’t sure).

Regards from germany
Thanks and have a good time michael mutzeck

I don't know the answer to your question, but how much horsepower do you get out of your engine? Thanks and good luck with your car.

No, but the greater TORQUE will cause damage....

Having said that, the TH350 should be fine. If you really have an 8 7/8" axle, that will also be fine. Your rear tires, on the other hand, are a different story.

Guten tag Mutzi!
I would get a mild shift improver kit for the transmission, and a transmission cooler for it, also.
I wish I could talk you back into the quadra-jet for the car, also. Better mileage, and better power too.

The wife and I got to Hamburg in February, and we had a wonderful time.
We may have to go back in the next year, if you get chance, we need more tips
on where to eat. We did find 1 place, The Old Commercial Room. Right across from St. Michel.
Traditional German food not to expensive.
That and some discount tickets on Luftansa, our flight.....was nicht gut.
Anyway good to see you on the board.
Keep us posted on the car.
Danke
Jim in Phx.

hi jim,
nice to hear that you come back next year to germany.
i would also flight in the usa, but the money for the work on the olds is to expensive. first was the parts for the engine, than was a other carburator and many other small parts.
i hope the result is worthwhile.

bye and have a good day

Sorry, that was a feeble attempt at humor.

You asked about increased HP causing damage, but it is actually increased torque that will cause damage. In any case, the TH350 was used behind the 403 in stock applications. If you choose to upgrade your 403, you may or may not need to either upgrade the TH350 or replace it with something stronger. It depends on your level of performance.

Well, for the level of power you want to make (300-350hp) your stock trans should be enough, if it is in good condition. A auxilary trans cooler isn't a must, as long as you are still using the one in the radiator, but it is recomended if you can afford it. Any time you can lower the temp in your transmission it will help it survive longer. All this is based on the fact that it is a street machine and NOT going to see any track use. If you take it to the track, the stock drivetrain will not live for very long.
