Loose balancer

Years ago I had a problem with my harmonic balancer not staying tight on my 455. Thought it was a bad balancer. Now I have a 350 that I just got running after years of sitting and noticed the harmonic balancer is loose. Is this common for olds or just for me?

Anyway, anyone know the size of socket it takes? I always had to borrow the neighbors now I have to go buy my own.

There's been a couple threads saying that the dorman aftermarket balance may not fit tight. I wonder if you have one of those?

I believe the socket is 1 1/4" but am not positive. If nobody else knows I'll check a motor in the garage tomorrow and find out for sure. John

1 1/8th socket for the balancer bolt. torque is 180ft.lbs if memory serves. If the balancer has been run loose you will need to mic the crank snout and balancer bore to make sure they are in spec. If the balancer bore is oversize you will need another one. If the crank snout is worn you are probably looking at getting another crank. Just my .02

I dont think It's an aftermarket balancer. The car had been sitting for years. I just fired it up and was surprised it ran. I'll check the balancer and crank.
