At this point, I think grasping at straws is all we have, at least until we can eliminate some of the possibilities.
How do you know which nozzles are ported and which are manifold?
Those directly in the intake are obvious, but what about the ones in the carb?
They could be either, right?

Didn't know 375 was an option in the 88's. Checked my '66 & '67 Dealer Brochures.
I see you're right.
I thought only the 365HP came in the 88's.
I have what I think is a '66 365HP, 425 that's been sitting on a cart in my shop for 15 or 20 years.
Came out of a "66 Jetstar 88.
Thought I'd eventually use it in something, but, that's looking more doubtful as time passes.
Considering letting it go.

Tried lowering the idle while it was idling fast.
As soon as I lowered it just slightly, it started running rough and stalled,
so I put it back where it was.
Did the same thing when I turned it down after starting cold.
The point where it idles won't go any lower, hot or cold.
If you let it go I'd be interested if its a good start for a rebuild

Usually the ports on the carb above the throttle plates are ported vacuum and those below and on the intake are vacuum all the time. Easy to test just run the engine an feel for vacuum, then crack open the throttle some and hold and see if you get vacuum....

... I didn't use the full "turkey tray" intake gasket, just a pair of Mr. Gasket intake gaskets.
I thought maybe this could allow excessive heat to get to the intake/carb.
Whether or not you use the turkey tray should have no bearing on how hot the carb gets - the heat from the exhaust passing through the crossover is a lot more than the heat in the valley area.

Joe,
I was thinking along the same lines.
The ports in the base plate, for the most part, are ported directly to the manifold, unrestricted.

Did you call the carb builder to discuss this. After rereading this thread it still points to a carb problem. If the primary throttle plates are sealing off completely in the bores and its still fast idling that internal carb problems. What are the vac readings with both normal and high idle?
