Getting a constant "code 41" on GM [FIXED]
Just want to share this info in case someone else comes across this problem; might be posted here somewhere already.
Last Fall when I bought my 1989 Olds 88, the "Service Engine" light was ON; 3.8L. The guy I bought it from told me the service garage had changed several sensors and still couldn't find the problem. I've ignored it because I've only used this car 5 times since I bought it.
Last week, I hooked up the scanner & got code 41 which is the Cam Sensor. I replaced the sensor, cleared computer codes and yet, the "Service Engine" light was still ON. I did some research and found out that the Cam Magnet (interrupter) was the problem. It breaks off the cam sprocket. To fix this, you have to remove the water pump etc... or you can take a shortcut like I did and it works fantastic. See
for step-by-step instructions. Credit goes to Padgett for the instructions.
