Edelbrock 1406 carb and fuel economy

Hey, I'm an Olds owner again!

Bought a 71 Cutlass with a 350 auto trans and 3.73:1 rear axle over the weekend and drove it home from NC.

Anyway, I'm a Q-jet man, but this thing has a 1406 Edelbrock Performer 600 cfm carb installed. Previous owner complained about the fuel economy, supposedly had the carb rebuilt by the neighborhood garage. I got 11.8 mpg on the highway!!! I'm hoping that I can bump it up to ~16 or so around town.

When I pulled the carb apart last night I saw that the floats were set at 9/32" instead of the specified 7/16". I'm sure that setting the carb up to specs will help a lot in the m.p.g. department.

I guess that what I wanted to ask is whether or not having the 3.73:1 rear axle will kill my chances of achieving 16 m.p.g.?

What fuel mileage do you guys get with your Edelbrock carb equipped Cutlasses? How about those with a Qj?

Best Regards,

Huron

I bought mine with a 1406 installed. It was a dog for mileage. Had 70Wcars on this board rebuild the original QJet and NEVER looked back!

Runs a lot further on a tank, but can't give specific MPG....3.42 gears threw the speedo cal WAY off! But my SOP (seat-of-pants) dyno sys that I'm much better off.
