If it's at 6:00 then the rotor has to point to #6, which will also work fine.

You set it to 6:00 for TDC#1 on those C-cars, not on Oldsmobiles.

Hi Eric. Ok so when I look at this diagram photo from the 72 csm
Manual page 6b-30 where they show the cam at 6 and the crank at 12 is that set up for the #6 cylinder at tdc? That's why i am confused. Thanks again so much to all of you for your help.
Chris

Okay, Chris, there is clearly some piece of information that has fallen out of my brain.

I KNOW that the standard TDC#1 setting is with both gear at 12:00.

I don't know why I know this, but I do. Or at least I think I do.

Now you've got me wondering.

I've checked the CSM, and I've checked my own photos. To wit:

... And I don't see anything aligned 12:00/12:00.

But, still, it is my belief that 12:00/6:00 is TDC#6 and 12:00/12:00 is TDC #1.

You can see this for yourself:
Line it up 12:00/6:00 and look at the distributor rotor - it should point toward whoever would be sitting in the front passenger seat.
Then rotate the engine 360 degrees so that it's 12:00/12:00 and look at the distributor again - it should point toward the battery (L front corner of the car).

If it does that, my memory is correct. If it does the opposite, then I need to up my dose of Aricept and Namenda.

Eric, ok, so good news, apparently you dont need more Aricept and Namenda. assuming the engine was in the car, When the cam is at 6 oclock and the crank is at 12, the rotor was pointing to the front passenger. When the cam and crank were both at 12 oclock then the rotor was pointing at the battery.
Also wanted to ask- when i rotate the crank i notice a very small amount of oil seems to be coming from where the crank meets the block. Nothing dripping, just enough to moisten the area around the crank after about 10-15 turns. Is this something i should be concerned about or just possibly some old oil being agitated out?
Thanks,
Chris

That's okay - there's oil all around inside the block.

Glad the engine is behaving as predicted!
