Correct expansion/freeze plugs
Correct expansion/freeze plugs
I ordered a set of brass freeze plugs from rockauto.com. They are close to correct, but seem too big. Maybe I'm just underestimating how hard I need to smack them in there. The hole in the block messures out at 1.5". The freeze plugs are like 1.64" (at the closed end). It looks to me like no way they will fit, but I have never done this before. Suck it up and hit them with a bigger FH or do I need to order different ones? If so, got part numbers?
What part number freeze plug kit did you get?
The installation is a little picky. Do it wrong and they will pop out. I had one pop loose and dumped hot water on me - day in the hospital and a few months regrowing skin. Not fun.
Use an installer that presses on the outer edge. Just hitting the center with a socket or something will cause it to pucker in and makes it likely to come loose. If you can't find an installer, then use a socket that completely fills the inside of the plug. And yes, it does take a BFH. They also have to go in dead square. YMMV.
I've always used the Milodon 34045 kit.

I first ordered a DORMAN 567001 kit from rockauto which didn't work:
https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=12605

Then I ordered the EP124BR kit from ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/221346977579...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
and it worked perfect. The plugs listed as 1.5", not 1.64' like rockauto and autozone say. I guess rockauto and autozone were wrong. Thanks for the help!

I didn't have an installation tool, so I used the same socket I used on the harmonic damper bolt. You can see the line it made inside the plug on the bottom picture. It was pretty close to the edge, but not exactly. Everything seemed to go smoothly though. I rubbed the instead mating surface with with a brillo pad and used a smear of RTV on the plugs. I'll be careful the first time I start it up and get it up to temp.
Any ideas what size/thread the plugs next to the freeze plugs are? I'd like to order brass versions of those and replace them too if I can.

I actually have owned and like Skylines. It was a tongue and cheek nickname somebody gave me. I hate ricers though.
Confirmed the plugs are 1/4 NPT. Any inputs on a hex head vs countersunk allen type plug? Strength/durability wise shen I go to remove it years down the road.
