Correct cooling fan 72 olds no AC?

Currently it has a 4 blade solid
Not sure if its supposed to have a shroud and a fan clutch ? Currently its just a small metal guard over the fan?

Model / drivetrain info would be helpful but in general, full shroud, a 5 or 6 blade fan and thermal clutch would be typical to find on an a/c car. Possibly no clutch fan for non-a/c and maybe 4-blade fan standard, but I think full shroud would have been standard across all models

Thank you , I will post pics later , customer complains car runs hot. I personally have not seen it over heat while we have had it.
I dont know what hes judging by the “runs hot”
He has a 40 year old aftermarket tri gauge in there now and god knows how accurate that is.

What temp is his aftermarket gauge showing at extended idling? He may be going through the never-ending cycle of overfilling and having it puke out coolant due to no head space.

it bounces all over the place,
Will rin up to about 230-240 then drop to 200 and then bounce around 200-230
I think the gauge is more of the problem?

That sounds more like an air pocket to me if they are rapid swings.

It usually happens when the cooling system is low and refilled. You get a steam pocket in that sensor area.

Do a thermostat as well, it could be sticking closed at times. You could do a 160 or 180 temp thermostat. How does the radiator look inside? I used that exact set up, including a recored at one point, had an old tag, 2 core orginal Copper/Brass radiator in my 70S. I did run CLR through it and really flushed the crap out. I never got over 195 with a 9 to 1 Olds 350 at a stop light. Going down the highway, it ran at thermostat temperature or very close. Good luck.

If it is a customers car, stick with a 180* thermostat as the 160* will not provide much heat if they drive in colder climates.

Agree, more to burn off condensation than heat output, a 195 is needed for max heating. I highly doubt if heat is priority in a 50 year old car, crazy to drive these in the Winter. The 180 thermostat is plenty of heat, even into our cool spring and fall.

I will report back after I do the hoses,T stat and over flow tank.
Car is in much need of love and deep pockets. Older Customer is trying to get a few more cruise nights out of it.

Well thanks guys
Customer supplied the puke tank and I wish he bought at least something more factory looking.
That , Fresh Thermostat. And coolant and all seems well. Almost ready for extended road test. Its running - touch over 200 by the AM gauge set.

Been off the road for at least 7 years and last I laid my hands on it was 2011 , installed a new battery and a Generic battery hold down.
