Commentary on newly rebuilt 350 engine running (video)
Attention engine experts (and armchair experts), please comment on what you see and hear in the accompanying video. This is my first time installing and starting a rebuilt engine. It's a 350 Olds.I already did the 20 min break-in using Brad Penn ZDDP oil.Converted to HEI during install.
Cutlass%20startup%20w-new%20exhaust2.mp4
No issues starting the engine right out of the gate.Engine temp stays rock steady at 180°F.
Issues
1.Slight miss during idle.
2.Gas spitting out of primaries.I already took the carb apart and checked the floats and cleaned the needle valves (brand new Edelbrock). Is it possible the fuel pressure is too high even with a mechanical fuel pump? The engine still runs OK (per the video).
3.Oil pressure seems steady but slight deflections of +/- 2 psi while at idle (see reading at the 00:50 mark). This may be normal, but not sure.
Other
1.New Pypes 2.5" stainless exhaust bolted to new Thornton 442 style headers .Will this sound good at speed or do I have to worry about drone?
2.I have not dialed in the timing yet.Right now it is 10°F in Ohio, so I didn't really get a good chance to spend more time on it before it got frigid.
3. No "glitter" on the oil stick.
Please feel free to provide any comments and recommendations (constructive please).
Thanks
Dave

Eric, the link has a broken-link icon for me but the link works. Nice looking car. I don't know about that jumpy oil pressure. I know mine doesn't do that. Could the line be kinked?

I didn't come up on my work pc, but did at home on my laptop. Seems to run pretty good. Probably some tweeking and it will be perfect. The jumping oil pressure is because of the gauge he's using.

I'd say carry on. Sounds good from here.
As far as the drone sound, you'll just have to wait and see. No big deal at this point until you can get it down the road.
Just a comment about the oil gauge. I sense at least two things that might be going on here. The quality might be a question but probably not.
One,your tune or idle quality might not be perfect now, probably will get better with fine tuning. A little bounce might be expected.
I'd be more concerned if you had a bouncy vacuum gauge. Not a bad idea to know what its pulling. Put that on your list.
Second, I've never installed a gauge directly to the port like this. Its only an assumption that with no line in between it can't absorb the pulses the line might absorb and thus might reflect its reading.
Keep us up to date on your progress.

1971 Supreme,
Small world. I bought the car in Brunswick. It was for sale at one of the Laurel Square cruise-ins a couple of years ago. Hopefully I'll see you out there this Spring. Look for the car shown below.

That is a really nice car you have there. Look forward to seeing you up at Laurel Square this spring. I had just gotten mine put back together within the past year, so this year I plan to have it out a lot more. The few times I had it up at show last year there was only one other Olds up there. Definitely look forward to meeting you up there and checking out your car. Picture looks awesome!!
