A/C connection?

Hi All,
I'm working on my 1976 Cutlass Supreme A/C today and have no idea what this is:

From the CSM, methinks it's the thermal limiter, but it's been hanging loose since I bought the car (haven't had the chance to address it until now). I wrapped electrical tape around it to protect it, but can't find any place where it would connect to or mount, it's just been sitting on top of the compressor!
Any advice is much appreciated!

Looks like the connector that connects , to the compressor, to ingage the clutch.Should be right there on top, the connectors right there. Not unusual for that connector to get loose and the get hot and become bad.

Also maybe the clutch froze up, and the person removed the wire to shut off the AC?

The piece in your hand is a thermal limiter sans its cover. It's connector looks overheated. I don't recall how it mounts other than a clip? to the AC compressor mounting bracket. It may have overheated for a few reasons e.g. bad clutch, dirty electrical connections.

They failed occasionally, get a couple once you get it up and running.

Good luck!!!
