BACKFIRING help

well another day another problem haha i love old cars...so today im driving to school and i noticed that the throttle was a little laggy after i was coasting for a few sec...it happened again so i acceled faster and my engine started to fire all weird and the BAM sounded like someone put a firecracker in my ear hahah..i can drive it slow and no problem but if i get on it, it bogs down and eventually pops...i need help figuring out what is wrong..PLEASE

Either a spark plug is fouling, or the timimg chain is going away - how many miles??

...or a bad set of points. Or a bad float in the carburetor, causing the motor to flood.... or (if you've converted to HEI) a bad pickup-coil.

Elementary troubleshooting time. Check for gas, ignition, then compression.

Gas has to be the proper amount - not flooding, but not starving (which can cause extreme lean conditions, which can make the motor sluggish and pop). Remove air cleaner, and observe the carb as the motor is running - gasoline bubbling out of the vent means the float is messed up. Work the throttle, and see if you can notice gasoline properly spraying into the venturis (may be a plugged filter if not).

If carb is o.k., procede to checking the ignition.

it has 65k miles and ok thanks ill check those things and get back to you guys

it turns out i just had to tune my carb...runs great
