81 cutlass brougham wagon engine swap

Will a 260 and transmission drop in to replace a 5.7 diesel/trans? Tired of replacing transmissions in the 5.7. Plus could never find glow plug relay up under the dash either. Thanks guys.

It will, but you're going to need to either COMPLETELY flush the fuel tank and lines, or replace them because you do not want diesel to get in a carburetor. Also the 260 is probably the only engine that would be slower than the diesel was.

Why are you constantly replacing transmissions?

The Olds diesel is externally identical to every other Olds small block. The TH200 trans that came with the 260 is no prize, by the way. You may want to consider a TH350. In addition to the fuel system changes, you need to be aware that the diesel motors used an offset motor mount on the driver's side to clear the larger diesel starter. As a result, the frame pad is relocated forward from the normal location for an Olds gas engine (note how the driver side mount is forward from the passenger side mount in this photo). There is an adapter plate on the diesel block that moves the rubber mount forward on the block. You can either relocate the frame pad to the normal gas engine location and use a 2328 mount in the normal location on the 260 block or you can leave the frame pad alone and transfer the adapter plate from the diesel block to the 260 to relocate the mount. Your choice.

Kevin, if your thinking that 260 cant hurt anything I may have some bad news. Its virtually identical in power output to the diesel 350. Both are 105 HP and the torque ratings are 195 lb ft and 200 lb ft respectively for 1981.

If we are talking a early TH200 on that 260 I would not bother. My brother had a bone stock 1979 Cutlass Calais Coupe with the 260. The transmission went on him twice... The early TH200 were/are a disaster.... He is not the beat on a car type, as a matter of fact it was mint and he babied it.

Now if it has a nice TH350 to go with it, your set.

Thanks guys. I pulled the 260 set up out of a 79 pontiac pheonix. I havent driven the wagon in about 5 years. Like i said, I could never get the trans cable adjust, nor the trans shop. I also could never find the glow plug relay up under the dash. I hate seeing the car sinkinto the ground. As for 5.7'S i have a couple i'll give away. And another. In a seville that was a great runner. If interested, you can pm me.

I'd go with a 350 Olds engine. A much better engine and has some power.
