Where are you? I have a set of 7's as is and a set of J's all done. You'll want to keep the compression and valve overlap reasonable if you have an emissions issue.
One thing that will help is a tight squish or quench area. That will reduce NOx emissions as well as CO and HC's.
I'm sure you will find a bunch of good info here. Use it to your advantage.

I LIVE IN THE INLAND VALLEY AREA. THIS BUILD OF THE 79 OLDS IS TO BE STREET LEGAL HERE IN CALI WE HAVE STRICT SMOG LAWS BUT I HEAR I COULD GET AWAY WITH IT IF I KEEP THE BUILD SIMPLE AND MILD

You're right. I know for a fact that if it comes in SOUNDING like a performance car it will get scrutinized that much more. I'm sure you'll be able to build something that wil satisfy both you and the sniffer.

Early 5, 6, or 7's all flow about the same. The later ones had an exhaust hump in the port if my info is right. I have 7's on my EFI'd .350 now. building another 350 but with Edelbrocks. That's why I have a spare set. Got J's as well, all done with 2.00 valves.
