73 350 and #5 heads
I'm going saturday to look at a 73 350 from a cutlass as well as a set of 5 heads that have large valves in them or as the old fellow called them " Hot rod heads'. He claims to still have the original ram air hood from from the car that came with these heads. The heads were rebuilt 12 years ago and bagged. The 350 has 80,000 on it. There is also a 67 330 from a cutlass. What serial numbers should I be looking for other than the 5 on the heads? Is there a number from the 330 that I may want to see? Don't really know what to offer this guy. I don't think he really knows the value but I don't want to insult him eighther. I have to buy all of it.

thats a tough one... i suppose $300 to $400 for the pair of heads if they are clean and rust free. the 350, if it has all the acessories on it and looks like it was well stored i'd say $200 to $300... the 330 & the hood, i dunno...

I bought the 73 350 for $50. Couldn't rotate it by the torque converter, so went with a seized offer and he took it. Lets hope not on saturday when I pick it up. The heads were not even olds, but pontiac #46 heads with a cylinder #5 mark where an olds 5 head id mark would be. Because the heads were bs, I didn't buy the whole lot. The 67 330 is still available and I think I might grab it for the forged crank?

What I'm hoping to do here is build a low-er budget small block. What can I expect to pay for some good used 403 or aftermarket rods? Will this combination of a 73 block/pistons, 67 330 crank and the 5, 6, 7 head be a good start? I'm looking for heads, but I would like a recomendation of who I should shop with on this site. I have an address in Blaine that I can have parts shipped to.

Use the 73 block, pistons, rods and crank if it isn't seized. The 67 330 heads will pretty much interchange with the 5,6,7,7A 350 heads. They have 60 cc give or take combustion chambers. The ports are supposed to be very similar to the early 350 heads. The only issue is grinding in the push rod area. I have heard of some of 67 330's having the later 39 degree bank angle, most had the early 45 degree angle. If your motor needs pistons CP or Probe carries light forged pistons. These would work well with sbc rods but the pin hole in the rod would need enlarged and the crank would need some widening and ground to the 2.1" journal size. Don't bother with heavy, soft 403 rods. There are also stroker pistons and rods to work with an offset ground crank. Your stock 73 heads would work best with porting with any readily available pistons with pump gas, if an over bore is necessary.

Yeah, no kidding. I have the option of grabbing this 67 330 and I'm trying to find out for sure if the 67 330 head are a good choice instead. I have the rpm intake as well.

If everything checks out fine with the 73 350, I'd just run it stock with those 330 heads, and a decent cam&springs.
You would be around 9:1 compression, and could have a decent lump for cheap.
Mill the heads some to get 10:1 compression, and it will be a hot little small block.
The 330 is more of originality piece in my opinion. Not a bad block, but there's better starting points.

Well, I bought the whole car for $500. Anyone up my way looking for cheap 67 cutlass parts? She's pretty rotten in the trunk and floor. Car has only 38,000 miles. The guy left it under a tree for 23 years. Shame on him! The console and shifter are in great shape and he is throwing in a second blue console and shifter as well. Got my 4 heads and should easily make my money back.

The 350 looks great. Sadly, there was some water in the block, so a magnaflux will be required. No rust inside, but the crank has yet to be pulled. I may have to use the 330 crank and will, if machining on the 350's is required. A couple of pics. The 67 442 get's dropped off next saturday. Can't wait to put those parts back into circulation for the rest of the olds guys out there. The console is a spare and is in pretty good shape, but the one in the car is black and mint. I preffer the hurst shifter, so I now have 2 factory shifters and 1 extra console for e-bay.

Pulled the 350's crank and all is well. Some rust on the oil pump/distr. shaft and a touch on the cam gear. Both parts getting tossed anyhow. Saved money on the bottom end and freed up more cash for the top end. I'm gonna need some serious info on cam specs, valvetrain suggestions, porting etc. fairly soon. The local builder's that I have met so far, seem fairly competent when it comes to other engines. I will most likely have to walk them through the Olds specific machining that I want, if any is required.

Tell your machinist to go on the high end of the factory specs for bearing clearance. I would think that crank might just need a polish. Probe makes a nice, light forged piston in .030". CP and Speed Pro also make forged replacements. The CP are probably the best but the most $. They are a 4.065" oversize, which would just require a block hone, which might offset the higher cost.

Found a builder. Pistons are re-usable but deck heght needs a trim of.018" to get the cr up. Heads are getting the crossovers welded up, a division of the 2 and 3 exhaust ports as well as 6 & 7, larger valves, porting, honeycomb valve springs. Short block should be done within a week. Will post some pics.

There are much better options, depending on what you want to do. Mark (cutlassefi) is an Erson seller. Seem to be good cams, but not used as often as others. He'll certainly work with you to choose a good grind.
I personally don't like the Comp grinds, but some folks do.
The old UltraDyne lobes are now owned by Bullet Cams. Very good stuff, but you'll need to specify what you want.
The guy that owned UltraDyne went to Lunati and designed the VooDoo line. Seem to have some steam behind them.
But it all depends on what it's going into and what you want. A/C? brake booster? What performance level? Is it a daily driver?

72 GMC p/u is the home. 72 GMC p/u 350 Olds. thread on here. Just had a good chat with cutlassefi. Gonna talk to my builder thurs. and get a bit more detailed about the build. Rearend gearing is still undecided.

The 77 350 that's in it now actually ripped er up pretty good. I'm looking forward to this engine coming together. Chevy won't happen in this truck as long as I own it. I can promise that. Great to be a part of something a bit different. Oldsmobile power is what makes my truck cool to me.
