Obviously Im a newbie...81 cut and 72 cutlass drop. If this is not the rite section for this subject let me know.


I have a stock 350 in the 72 cutlass I just bought. Basically I want to clean it up, dress it up and add a little horsepower without having to pull the motor. Mechanicially the car needs nothing but a lil carb work. rides VERY smooth. Im thinking intake manifold and carb. Headers, new exhuast and the normal dress up kit.

My question is what Manifold, carb, and headers should I go with and what will this do to the power in my motor? All my buddys are Chevy guys and their suggestions are irrelevant because they dont know olds motors.

I guess that means an 81 Cutlass with a 1972 Olds 350 dropped in it.

I think I saw in another thread, that you put the 4 bbl on it already.

The next thing I would do, is RE-GEAR the car. You probably have a 2.29/2.41 differential gear in it. If you no longer have the overdrive transmission, you need to get at least a 3.08/3.23 gear in the car. Even a 455 will not smartly move the car, with the gears you have. If you had a 3.73 gear in the car, you would have said so. You should get a 3.73 if you have the overdrive.

Dual exhaust. Headers are a +, but just a dual exhaust will be beneficial.

Re-curve that distributor.

No I was saying (Matter of factly) I have 2 cars. 1981 and 1972 cutlass's. I have a numbers matching 350 in the 1972.

 

The Edelbrock performer works good for me, but I don't have headers so can't help there.I did upgrade mine with a Pertronix kit to replace the points and it was worth it to me.

 

warhead, please explain recurving the dist. I have upgraded mine (also a 72 350) to a 4 barrel with duals and headers and a pertronix kit. the rear end change(3:42) is next in line for funding!

 

im new as well but my experience i had a 77 cutlass i found that i put a edelbrock performer aluminum intake with two one inch plates and 600cfm edlebrock carb and i had imidiate horsepower without pulling the engine i didnt put headers on that one i endid up selling it after i put my foot through the floor lol. Can you help me find a 75-77 olds engine harness? thanks

 

ended up going with the performer intake and 600 cfm carb. It added a lot of torque but not alot in top end power. I will be changing out the rear end though! Only problem is i think I gota play with the choke more. I have to pump the gas to get it to start a lot even after itas been driven all day.
