69 Cutlass Supreme 350

Hey Guys, Question. It is my understanding that all of the 69 Supremes were not the low compression 9:1 motors but rather the 10.25:1 motors with two barrel carbs. Is that correct or was I misled? There is a 69 Supreme on ebay through Streetside that I'm interested in. They claim "era correct" motor. I spoke with them on the phone and as of right now they cannot verify if it is the original motor or not. They only checked the block casting not the vin stamp. He told me they would attempt to verify the vin stamp and get back to me. They are wanting $25,000. I think that is high for a Supreme, but all of the trim is present and the car looks fairly unmolested. It looks like a fairly clean driver. If anyone would care to check it out and give me your opinions, here is the link.

Thanks.

The 9:1 350 engines have 2bbl carbs.
The 10.25:1 350 engines have 4bbl carbs.

There were no 9:1 350 engines with 4bbl carbs, and no 10.25:1 350 engines with 2bbl carbs. There were some BBO engines like that, though.

So back to the Supremes then, were they 10.25:1 with 4 barrels. I can't remember where I read or was told about the Supremes being the high compression motors.

Rather than guess, let's go to the factory specs for 1969. Standard equipment engine in the 1969 Supreme was the L74 350 4bbl motor. 310 HP/390 ft-lb, 10.25 CR. The L65 350 2bbl motor (250 HP/355 ft-lbs, 9.00 CR) was a $33.70 credit option. Those were the only two engine options offered in the Supreme for the 1969 model year.

Great info Joe. So you had to option the low compression motor. Interesting. I guess I still won't know which motor is in that Supreme. Oh well, if the vin matches, at least it's original. I love peoples ignorance about Oldsmobile marketing. The salesman told me "this is the high performance 'rocket' engine".

Any opinions on the car?

Its got the red air cleaner for a (non-OAI) 4bbl. Car looks clean and appears to have all the correct trim for a Supreme. The cupholders in the console / hump are not original.

My '70 C/S 'vert had that credit option of the 2-bbl 350 (it, as well as my '68 2bbl, say "Rocket" on the air cleaner too).

If they claim they dont know if its original engine or not, its almost always not! This isnt the first car theyve sold.

the car looks mostly complete and original, it appearsto be in good shape as well. Pending an independent or in person inspection i would say 14-18k if its as it appears.

This is close to good driver 442 money fwiw.

i think 25 is too high, however someone else may not.

I agree. I was thinking 18k was where I was at also. I also agree with the driver 442 money. I am willing to go a little higher than normal because I personally have a soft spot for the 69 Supremes. It was my first car. even though it wasn't my first choice, I fell in love with the car. Now days it is difficult to find a Supreme that is complete and in good shape. Especially the trim.

From the ad. Sure sounds like wording to evade saying it's not the original engine.

Under the hood is an era-correct V8. Everything even looks correct

This one even has a new four-barrel carburetor on top.

Agreed. That's why I'm waiting to hear from them on the vin stamp. I told them if it is not the original motor, it will have a significant effect on my bid if at all.

A rust hoarder vinyl top, hopefully no ugliness hiding underneath it. Probably an unturned Edelbrock 600 cfm carb on a Performer manifold.

Well as an update, I have heard nothing back from Streetside about the vin stamp. The fact that they have an interested party on an auction that ends in a day and they have not provided the info I asked for indicates that it is not the original motor. They claim the car has less than 50,000 miles, but the original motor is gone. Sure it's possible, but definitely odd. This is a supreme not a 442 W30 4 speed. One would assume that it was not bought by someone that would beat on it. My interest is waning. The bid on it is just a hair over $10,000. I'm thinking 13k would be my top, but not sure I will even pursue it. My Cutlass S has documented 52,000 miles and the drivetrain is original. I'm just partial to the Supremes.

That's a beautiful car, and I am obviously a 1969 Cutlass Supreme aficionado. Yes my car has the same interior and components, etc. Yes I believe that car is a Cutlass Supreme. But that is 442 money and I mean very nice 442 money, like this.

Regardless of numbers matching engine I wouldn't touch that 69 at that price. To me a muscle era 442 in similar condition is twice the car, and worth twice as much.
