Do you have to take the crank out to see if it swm engine??

No. You don't even need to remove the oil pan. They do NOT exist

^^^THIS. Just look at the outside of the block. If it says "403" on the sides, it is NOT a solid main web motor.

If it is an SMW then someone spent $$$ to have them welded up.

I am toying with the idea of dumping my 403 in favor of an LS with a 6L80E in my 54 88.

I did a 455 for a guy in Melbourne AUS years ago running propane. It went in a ‘54 Holiday coupe I believe. Still driving it today. Keep it Olds.

If you read the OP's other thread, he doesn't even have a 403. He has an early 350 block.
