350 Stops running

Stock 350. 72CS. Cruising 30 MPH and car suddenly starts loosing power , hesitation and stops running. Almost as if it had run out of gas. Tank shows between 1/4 and 1/2. Started once after rolling to a stop ,but only ran for 5 or 6 seconds then died. Towed it back to driveway. Tried this AM and will only turn over ,will not start. I’m going to put 5 Gallons in tank just in case my gauge broke… I don’t think so but….
any other suggestions.
Thanks.

Check inlet fuel filter at carb, possible fuel pump issue, do you have spark when cranking?
Put a bit of gas down the carb to see if it will fire if you have spark.
just a few things I would start with.

The 2 things that will keep an engine from running are the lack of fuel or the lack of a properly timed spark. You need to see which is the problem and go from there.

Positive results, fuel pump works, took fuel filter out and car runs. Yea. Dumb question number , ok most of my questions are prob dumb,
The filter has a closed end and one end with small hole. Which way should the filter be inserted into housing? In my opinion the filter looks good but IDK.

The end with the hole goes toward the fuel pump. Filters are generally replaced everytime they are removed. To know its condition it has to be cut open which ruins the filter.

This is C R I T I C A L, be patient to perfectly align the filter inlet nut by hand into the carb and use a new gasket.

Good luck!!!

Thanks. I finally found the pic in the CSM. I was looking in fuel tank section. When I removed it did not have the gasket nylon installed. ? Would the absence of this gasket cause the engine to not run? Heading to Advanced.

No. The only thing that might happen would be a fuel leak, and that would be evident immediately.

Look in the carb inlet to confirm that the old gasket isn't stuck in there.

Good luck!!!

Thanks guys. All helpful. Yes the gasket was stuck in the housing. It has discolored some so camouflaged. Who knew a little o filter could disable this mighty small block. Back on the road !!!!
