Still waiting on the Scat balancer and high volume oil pump. Otherwise just an AEM wideband, cam button and the roller cam length 3/8" push rods, which he should have or can easily get, all paid for. He also had my brand new Sanderson shorties, I will pay for him to send them for coating. Mark had two Melling high volume oil pumps fail on the dyno, which doesn't help the supply issue. He needed the two in stock for the builds he was doing right now, I'm weeks away. The heads will hopefully be available Spring/Summer. If not, then milled Procomps with minor work will take their place. I'm so happy everything went off without a hitch on the fire up and break in. Reminds me, I need an oil filter cutter.

Mark talked to them, supposedly the issue is fixed, now just to wait for a good one to come available. Unfortunately sealed power is the only other option I know of for stock or high volume and actually fit without pan modification. Not sure if there are issues with the Sealed Power pumps, only used Melling for Olds aftermarket pumps.

I've been waiting for a break in the weather to take her out on the maiden voyage with the new engine and finally had a window tonight (rain washed the salt off the roads earlier and today was dry). Put 22 miles on the new motor and she runs/drives/sounds like a completely different car. I chose a secondary route that offered 0-55mph, varying speeds & traffic, & tried to limit her to 3200rpm or so. Had to tighten a hose clamp that had loosened up a bit but everything else seemed good. Only 478 more miles until I see what she can do .

Finally a sunny Saturday! I took back roads all afternoon, put 142 miles on the new engine, and had a great time in the process. When I got back I had to reset timing & idle: idle had crept up about 300RPM and timing had advanced 4 degrees. I take that to mean she's breaking in.

I am so glad it has been a success! Make sure you do another short mile oil change. Just a good idea and cheap insurance. Beautiful Convertible!

I finished the 500 mile break-in & changed her oil yesterday at 515 miles. Looked pretty good overall. I found a fair amount of carbon in the oil filter when I cut it open so I'm thinking 1,000 miles until the next oil change. Found a few particles in the drain oil. We had record high temps this weekend so she went out top down:

Hate to say it but whatever that black stuff is in the oil filter does not belong there. It is not "carbon" It is either dirt that was not cleaned out during the build or something is starting to come apart. Can you tell if the particles are magnetic ? Looks like a bunch of dirt to me I certainly would not drive it another 1000 miles before checking it again. Maybe 10 - 20 and pull the filter off again. If there is more of the same in it then its time to take it apart and find out where it is coming from.

Overall she's running well.

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately all of the filter remnants have gone out in the trash so I can't run a magnet across it. I didn't see anything that looked metallic. The machine shop assembled the long block...sounds like I should give them a call and show them the pics.

I'm glad I cut the filter open. I wouldn't have seen anything had I not done this.

Yikes!

I would at least send an oil sample away for testing. Me, i would pull the pan and have a look at the bearings
