After several attempts to get the engine to turn in my 1955 98 I've decided to go with a more modern Olds small block. My question is, are there folks interested in buying the complete engine and hydramatic trans for their original restoration projects? If so what's the value of such an engine that is of unknown shape? I would anticipate that it needs a complete overhaul. Let me know what y'all think. Thanks

A good rebuild will run $4-6K for reputable shop. If you haven't already, try spinning the oil pump with an electric drill and soaking each cylinder with penetrating oil. Leave the plugs out so there is no compression. If using the starter, check the electrical setup; connect the ground directly to a starter mounting bolt and clean the contacts on the solenoid. If available use 2 gauge wires and clean all connections with a wire brush. Be sure you have a strong 12 volt source. Best wishes for success.

I believe if you go to the 371 or 394, you will have to go to he later model transmission which is not as good as the hydramatic in your car. As therobski mentioned, the later model Olds engine and transmission can be installed but it is a lot of work and $$. The 324 uses a front motor mount and the 350 and 455 use side mounts.

Thanks for the advise. I will give the starter a go. I have been trying to turn by hand. Also I didn't realize how different the mounts are from various years. My recent project which is near complete is a 1955 GMC 1/2 ton with a Mercedes turbo disiel under the hood. It was alot more time and money than I ever imagined.
