307 question
307 question
I have a few questions about the 307 in my 86 cutlass. I've noticed that in the mornings i'll crank it up to drive it and i'll hear a little knocking. The car never smokes and it's never hard to crank but, I had the hood open and crunk it from the outside and listened for it and I didn't hear it but when I got up under the car I heard it and I couldn't really tell from where. Sounded like it came from the bottom of the oil pan or even the flywheel. I checked the flywheel bolts and they're not loose it doesn't leak or burn oil and its full of oil its not low. and it only does it on the first crank of the day. When I start driving it you no longer hear it, so it doesn't knock while driving and its good for the rest of the day. and there are sometimes when it doesn't even do it. So could it be something serious. I know that my exhaust pipe is loose and it shakes could that be it? and I need another motor mount cause one has went bad so it does shake a bit but not a lot so could that be it? Just all speculation. I have 2 other cutlass. a 81 with a 403/400 and a 83 with a 350/350 and haven't had any problems. But as far as drive ability it has no problems except that. So if anyone can help me out or could give me a clue as to what it is I will appreciate it. Also i'm a newbie to this site lol. But I'am a olds fanatic well a cutlass fanatic lol.
Yup.
Yup.
Other possibilities include a loose starter and a cracked flexplate (unless this is a manual trans car with an actual flywheel).
Welcome.

Hey thanks man i'll look at the flexplate. Meant to say that instead of flywheel. Thanks a lot man! And would you happen to know what all is involved in a big block swap. I'm looking at purchasing another Cutlass 1987 it has a 307 but it doesn't run so what all would I have to swap out in order to make it work?
I've never done one, but others here have, and there are a number of threads on the subject - if you search you should find them, and if you can't post up a new thread and someone will point you to them.
Essentially, it's a shoehorn bolt-in - the BB is just a bit wider, but all of the other important dimensions are the same. If you want to keep the R4 A/C compressor, you'll have to modify a bracket, as one was never made for the BBO.
